Memory & Oblivion

  • Categories: Art

Memory is a subject that recently has attracted many scholars and readers not only in the general historical sciences, but also in the special field of art history. However, in this book, in which more than 130 papers given at the XXIXth International Congress of the History of Art (Amsterdam) 1996 have been compiled, Memory is also juxtaposed to its counterpart, Oblivion, thus generating extra excitement in the exchange of ideas. The papers are presented in eleven sections, each of which is devoted to a different aspect of memory and oblivion, ranging from purely material aspects of preservation, to social phenomena with regard to art collecting, from the memory of the art historian to workshop practices, from art in antiquity, to the newest media, from Buddhist iconography to the Berlin Wall. The book addresses readers in the field of history, history of art and psychology.

Post-Impressionists in England

  • Categories: Art

First Published in 1988, Post-impressionists in England documents the response of English taste to modern French art from the first Post-Impressionist Exhibition in 1910 to the outbreak of the First World War. The notion of ‘Post-Impressionism’, unlike its earlier counterpart, Impressionism, was an exclusively English contribution to art history. Originally used to denote the work of Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse and the Fauve painters, it rapidly assimilated Futurism, Cubism and recent English work like Vorticism. By focusing on one aspect of an important and complex period in British cultural history, J.B. Bullen illuminates not only aesthetic questions but also the way in which ...

In "Percival's Picture Gallery," A. L. O. E. (the pen name of the prolific author Charlotte Maria Tucker) presents a charming exploration of morality, beauty, and imagination through the lens of art. This literary work combines engaging narrative with vivid descriptions, ensuring that illustrations serve not merely as ancillary to the text but as integral components that enhance the reader's understanding of complex themes. The book, set against the backdrop of the Victorian era's burgeoning interest in aesthetics and visual culture, captures the zeitgeist by encouraging readers to contemplate the relationship between visual representations and moral lessons. A. L. O. E. was a socially consc...

This volume is part of a 2001 reissue of a selection of those important works which have since gone out of print, or are difficult to locate. Published by Routledge, 112 volumes in total are being brought together under the name The International Behavioural and Social Sciences Library: Classics from the Tavistock Press. Reproduced here in facsimile, this volume was originally published in 1963 and is available individually. The collection is also available in a number of themed mini-sets of between 5 and 13 volumes, or as a complete collection.
