The Oxford Handbook of the European Iron Age

The Oxford Handbook of the European Iron Age presents a broad overview of current understanding of the archaeology of Europe from 1000 BC through to the early historic periods, exploiting the large quantities of new evidence yielded by the upsurge in archaeological research and excavation on this period over the last thirty years. Three introductory chapters situate the reader in the times and the environments of Iron Age Europe. Fourteen regional chapters provide accessible syntheses of developments in different parts of the continent, from Ireland and Spain in the west to the borders with Asia in the east, from Scandinavia in the north to the Mediterranean shores in the south. Twenty-six thematic chapters examine different aspects of Iron Age archaeology in greater depth, from lifeways, economy, and complexity to identity, ritual, and expression. Among the many topics explored are agricultural systems, settlements, landscape monuments, iron smelting and forging, production of textiles, politics, demography, gender, migration, funerary practices, social and religious rituals, coinage and literacy, and art and design.

Elasticity and Plasticity of Large Deformations

This careful and detailed introduction to non-linear continuum mechanics and to elasticity and platicity, with a unique mathematical foundation, starts right from the basics. The general theory of mechanical behaviour is particularized for the broad and important classes of elasticity and plasticity. Brings the reader to the forefront of today's knowledge. A list of notations and an index help the reader finding specific topics.

Recent years have seen a vigorous revival of interest in relativism - both in support and in opposition. This collection of 21 essays, 16 of which appear in print here for the first time, advances the discussion found in an earlier volume, Relativism: Cognitive and Moral. These present selections focus on philosophical and methodological issues of relativism by exhibiting its varieties and by rehearsing its virtues and vices. The contributions concern relativism in a wide range of practices in the human studies.

Normative, Atypical or Deviant? Interpreting Prehistoric and Protohistoric Child Burial Practices

This volume explores the response of the living when dealing with the death of a child. Papers focus on juvenile burial practices in Europe and the Near East during recent prehistory and protohistory. The interpretation of normative, atypical or deviant is interrogated based on the context of the burials and the intentionality of the practice.

Generation and Parametric Amplification of Few‐Cycle Light Pulses at Relativistic Intensities

This book reports on the development of a pioneering light source architecture of the so-called Petawatt Field Synthesizer (PFS) system, which is based on short-pulse pumped, optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), driven by a homemade, 1-ps diode-pumped Yb:YAG. At a few-cycle pulse duration of the amplified pulses, this architecture yields record levels of peak power and temporal contrast, the latter boasting a 100-times faster rise time from the noise level to peak intensity of the pulse compared to conventional laser systems. This allows investigation of the true laser–solid interaction without premature plasma expansion and without lossy pulse cleaning by e.g. plasma mi...

Line Graphs and Line Digraphs

Line Graphs and Line Digraphs

In the present era dominated by computers, graph theory has come into its own as an area of mathematics, prominent for both its theory and its applications. One of the richest and most studied types of graph structures is that of the line graph, where the focus is more on the edges of a graph than on the vertices. A subject worthy of exploration in itself, line graphs are closely connected to other areas of mathematics and computer science. This book is unique in its extensive coverage of many areas of graph theory applicable to line graphs. The book has three parts. Part I covers line graphs and their properties, while Part II looks at features that apply specifically to directed graphs, and Part III presents generalizations and variations of both line graphs and line digraphs. Line Graphs and Line Digraphs is the first comprehensive monograph on the topic. With minimal prerequisites, the book is accessible to most mathematicians and computer scientists who have had an introduction graph theory, and will be a valuable reference for researchers working in graph theory and related fields.

Due to the rapid progress in laser technology a wealth of novel fundamental and applied applications of lasers in atomic and plasma physics have become possible. This book focuses on the interaction of high intensity lasers with matter. It reviews the state of the art of high power laser sources, intensity laser-atom and laser-plasma interactions, laser matter interaction at relativistic intensities, and QED with intense lasers.
