UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION EFFECTS.
Project 1.7 of Operation TEAPOT was concerned with the measurement of surface and subsurface effects of an underground explosion of a 1.2-kt nuclear burst (Shot 7). The measurements included free-field earth and airblast effects, as well as loading on underground structural devices. This report deals with the presentation and analysis of the free-field data only; the structural data have been transmitted to the appropriate agencies for their analysis. From the 76 channels installed on TEAPOT Shot 7, 75 usable records were obtained. The free-field quantities measured include air-blast pressure, earth acceleration, earth stress and strain, and permanent earth displacement. The results are discussed by phenomenon and, in each case, the TEAPOT data are compared with pretest predictions. Also, where data are available, comparisons are made with previous underground nuclear test results. Some aspects of seismology and soil mechanics as applied to underground explosion phenomena are presented and, finally, the most pertinent high explosives results from subsequent tests conducted at the TEAPOT location are summarized. Power Spectrum Analysis of Wave Motion, Submarine Roll Angle, and Relative Cross-flow Velocities
This report discusses the general problem of recording and analyses of wave, submarine, and fluid motion data obtained from the USS Redfin while hovering at keel depths (near 100 feet) at different relative headings. In particular, the problem of recording surface wave heights with the Sonic Surface Scanner is discussed. Power spectral estimates obtained by both analog and digital methods are presented. Composite graphs of power spectra of data are presented, and mean values of the motion are given in tabulated form.
The Wiancko Family, from 1785
Friedrich Samuel Wieantke was born in Guhrau, Silesia, June 30, 1785. On Feb. 25, 1805, he married Johanna Louise Methners (born April 18, 1786 in Guhrau). Their grandson, Friedrich Wilhelm Theodor Adolph Wiancko (1838-1907), immigrated to Canada and settled in Sparrow Lake, Ontario. Descendants live in Ontario, Alberta, Oklahoma, New York and elsewhere in Canada and the United States.
Instrumentation of Structures for Air-blast and Ground-shock Effects
Self-recording guages for measuring peak pressures, pressures vs. time, dynamic pressures vs. time, and displacement vs. time are described; electronic guages for obtaining time dependent records of pressure, dynamic pressure, acceleration, displacement, and earth pressure are described. For each type gauge, details are given on the recording mechanism, transducer element guage mount, calibration, and data presentation. A plot of the field layout is also shown. A tabulation indicating the general success of the instrumentation recording operations and a discussion of anomalies is presented. Finally, recommendations for more effective instrumentation practices are given.
