The book showcases drawings in a wide range of media, from works in charcoal and crayon to colored pencil, collage or papiers collés, graphite, gouache, ink, pastel, and watercolor. Some of the drawings on loan are rarely on view and they provide insight into the evolution of his iconic paintings, such as Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Guernica, while others stand alone as virtuoso, independent works, highlighting Picasso’s mastery of line, form, and medium. The book ultimately examines how drawing serves as the vital thread connecting all of Picasso’s art.
Jean-Michel Basquiat Drawing
The first book on the drawings and works on paper of this legendary cult artist. Published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name, Jean-Michel Basquiat Drawing is the first book on the Schorr Collection of Basquiat’s works on paper. Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was barely out of his teens when he rocketed to the center of New York’s art scene; he was 27 when he died of a heroin overdose. A friend of Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, and always controversial, Basquiat is now established as a major contemporary painter whose unique work continues to enthrall. Herbert and Lenore Schorr began collecting the work of Basquiat in 1981, before his first New York exhibition. During the artist’s seminal years of 1982–83, the Schorrs acquired several of his most important paintings, but in contrast to virtually every other early collector, the Schorrs also pursued and acquired a great number of works on paper both directly from the artist and from his first dealer. Their collection demonstrates the focus and ambition that the artist invested in the medium of drawing.
California Landscapes
A must-have for anyone interested in these two beloved West Coast artists, best known for their geometric abstractions of the California landscape. Featuring the pairings of more than 50 paintings, this book shows the connection of these two artists like never before. Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud were close friends; they shared the inspiration of California and experimented with perspective to capture their surroundings. The book includes important examples from Diebenkorn’s Berkeley series in addition to several works from the artist’s Ocean Park series. Inspired by the environs of the Ocean Park neighborhood in Santa Monica, where he lived at this time, these works from the 1960s are characterized by geometric abstractions of subtle line and suffused with Californian luminosity. Wayne Thiebaud began producing landscapes in the 1960s, experimenting with perspective to capture his Californian surroundings. Included are his works from the early 1970s through 2017, including his dramatic depictions of San Francisco, flattened aerial views of the Sacramento River Delta, and close-ups and cross-section views of mountains and beaches.
Tom Sachs
The most recent body of paintings of this New York-based artist, featuring the artist's examination of consumer culture in his handmade, "do-it- yourself " aesthetic. This is the first publication to focus exclusively on the roughly hewn paintings by Tom Sachs (b. 1966), tracing his interest in combining cultural icons and corporate logos with a handcrafted aesthetic. Mining the American landscape for iconography, Sachs investigates themes of corporate and cultural identity--such as consumerism, branding, cultural dominance, and technological development--to explore the achievements, failures, and inherent contradictions of contemporary society. In addition to the essay by David Rimanelli and twenty-two plates, there is a conversation with the artist and an extensive chronology. Sachs's meticulously handcrafted paintings depict such diverse topics as the Reese's candy bar, Fanta logo, Family Guy, Air Force One, Krusty O's cereal box, and the American flag; all modern icons that document successes and failures of the American experience and the ambiguities and contradictions inherent in its society and culture.
Eva Hesse and Hannah Wilke
An in-depth look at these two American artists, who explored issues of sexuality and feminism in the 1960s and 1970s in their sculpture and photography. This exhibition and accompanying book offers the first opportunity to appreciate the resonances between the studio practices of Eva Hesse and Hannah Wilke. Both artists found themselves drawn to unconventional materials, such as latex, plastics, erasers, and laundry lint, which they used to make work that was viscerally related to the body. They shared an interest in repetition to amplify the absurdity of their work. These repeated forms--whether Hesse's spiraling breast or Wilke's labial fold--sought to confront the phallo-centricism of twentieth-century sculpture with a texture that might capture a more intimate, psychologically charged experience. Eleanor Nairne, the curator of the exhibition, writes the lead essay, followed by texts by Jo Applin and Anne Wagner. An extensive chronology by Amy Tobin includes primary-source materials, which bring a new history of how both artists' work sits in relation to the wider New York scene. Also included are excerpts of both artists' writing.
Jean Dubuffet: Anticultural Positions
The catalogue to a groundbreaking exhibition of Dubuffet’s seminal “Art Brut” and including historic essays by the artist published in English for the first time. Jean Dubuffet is a French painter and sculptor who painted in a deliberately crude manner, inspired by art of the mentally ill or “Art Brut.” Dubuffet developed a technique of thick impasto and frequently incorporated unorthodox materials ranging from cement and gravel to leaves, dust, and even butterfly wings into his works. His controversial materials and mark-making solidified his legacy as an iconoclastic figure in the canon of postwar European paintings, and his work has been exhibited and collected all over the world. This is the first book to be published on Dubuffet’s early work in painting and sculpture in more than two decades. Organized by Mark Rosenthal, the exhibition focuses on Dubuffet’s work from 1943 to 1959, and emphasizes the artist’s anticultural approach in his depiction of subjects and his use of unorthodox materials. Several works by the French painter are on loan from private collections and museums.

The Worlds of Joaquín Torres-García
One of the most revered Latin American artists of the early 20th century, best known for his abstract and primitive paintings, with key works from private collections published for the first time. With 70 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, this is the largest survey of Torres-García’s work to be on view in an American gallery since Joaquín Torres-García curated his own exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery in 1950. The book includes previously unpublished texts by the artist and iconic works that were kept by the family as representative examples of different moments in his career, first by the artist and later by family members who inherited them as a group. Torres-García founded the avant-garde group Circle and Square (Arp, Kandinsky, Léger, Mondrian), where he was inspired by indigenous art from the Americas, Africa, and Oceania, which reinforced his vision of symbols and cosmic order.

Wayne Thiebaud Mountains
Best known for his paintings of pies and cakes, this beloved West Coast painter explores the theme of mountains, capturing the majesty and strength of the forms. In the 2000s, California-based painter Wayne Thiebaud began focusing on a series of mountain paintings, a subject he had first addressed in the 1960s and 1970s. Rendered in his signature confectionary palette, these colorful works combine memories of mountains he had seen in childhood and observations of the summits of the Sierra Nevada Range in Yosemite. With their heroic, exaggerated proportions and unusual perspectives, these paintings seem to combine fiction and reality.
