" La Nouvelle-France, explorée en 1534 par Jacques Cartier, occupée par Champlain en 1608, estimée à la plus haute valeur par de grands hommes d’État, comme le président Jeannin, le cardinal de Richelien, l’illustre Colbert, avait pu conquérir, dès la fin du XVIIe siècle, une importance considérable. Et en effet, cette colonie, confinée d’abord sur les rives du Saint- Laurent, était devenue, vers l’année 1700, une domination puissante. Elle s’étendait depuis Terre-Neuve jusqu’aux montagnes Rocheuses, depuis la baie d’Hudson jusqu’au golfe du Mexique. Ainsi elle formait un immense triangle présentant 900 lieues sur chaque face, c’est-à-dire 400,000 lieues carrées, près de onze fois la surface du la France. Une si vaste contrée était aussi précieuse par l’abondance de ses produits que par leur variété ; elle offrait à la mère patrie une source inépuisable de richesse. À l’ouest, des forêts sans limites; au nord, la région des fourrures ; à l’est, les grandes pêcheries de Terre-Neuve ; enfin au sud, un sol fertile, un climat enchanteur, avec les produits incomparables des tropiques."
