Thabo Mbeki and the Battle for the Soul of the ANC

As a spokesman for a country, a continent and the developing world, Thabo Mbeki played a crucial role in world politics, but to many people he remained an enigma throughout his presidency. Is this simply because he was a secretive man, or were there complicated political factors at play? Who was the real Mbeki? In this book, multiple-award-winning journalist William Mervin Gumede chronicles Mbeki’s spectacular rise to dominate Africa’s oldest liberation movement. He explores the complex position that Mbeki occupied – following in Nelson Mandela’s footsteps, holding together an alliance with deep ideological differences, and ruling an intensely divided country. Revealing the political and personal tensions behind the scenes, Gumede explains how Mbeki sought to mould the ANC into his image through tight control, and exposes the intrigues behind the battle for succession. Covering Mbeki’s attempts to modernise the economy and kick-start an African Renaissance, and investigating his controversial stance on issues from AIDS to Zimbabwe, the book offers invaluable insights into the arcane machinations behind political decisions that touch the lives of millions every day.

This is an unconventional, contemporary biography of Thabo Mbeki, the current South African President, with a strong journalistic slant, focusing on representations in the media, and how media images of him have changed over time. It contains press features and articles on Mbeki, political cartoons, and transcriptions of interviews he has given over the years, including his testimony with Oliver Tambo before the Foreign Affairs Committee on the necessity for economic sanctions in 1985; and on the period as Deputy President, and President-in-waiting from 1995. As a whole, the work emphasises Mbeki as a politician working within the tradition of the ANC, and as a pragmatist. It focuses on his leadership in the context of his society; his race and identity politics; and his handling of the Zimbabwean land and the South African HIV/AIDS crises.

This book critically examines the realities of liberal democracy; its elitism and non-accountability; and its inequalities and injustices. Participatory systems and movements, whether in Athens, seventeenth and nineteenth century England, or South Africa 1970-1990, are more effective in satisfying the democratic aspirations of the people and in curtailing ambitious elites, than what is passed off now as 'democracy'. By interrogating contemporary democratic regimes, in the United States, and in Botswana and South Africa, the severe limitations and constraints inherent in liberal democracy are highlighted. The need for a clear evaluation of what constituted democracy emerges as a powerful message of Kenneth Good's argument.

This book analyzes the origins of the crisis in Zimbabwe and why it has had such a profound impact on both the land issue and democratic politics in the Southern African region. In doing so, it contributes to the present debates around Mugabe, neo-imperialism and the stability in the region.

The Provocations of Amnesty

South Africa's amnesty was a unique experiment. A path that lay 'between a Nuremberg option and total amnesia, ' the amnesty process was designed in the heat of a remarkable and complex transition to constitutional democracy
