IISS 2019
The International Interdisciplinary Studies Seminar (IISS) is an annual scientific conference that provides a unique platform for scientists, researchers, and professionals across multiple disciplines to share their research advancements and critical ideas to address the social sciences issues (Social capacity for environmental protection, community-driven environmental management). The conference was initiated 12 years ago by recognising that social problems require an interdisciplinary approach to reach a holistic solution. ICBAE 2020
The 2nd International Conference of Business, Accounting, and Economics (ICBAE) 2020 continued the agenda to bring together researcher, academics, experts and professionals in examining selected theme by applying multidisciplinary approaches. This conference is the second intentional conference held by Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto and it is a bi-annual agenda of this faculty. Indonesian Women and Local Politics
In an important social change, female Muslim political leaders in Java have enjoyed considerable success in direct local elections following the fall of Suharto in Indonesia. Indonesian Women and Local Politics shows that Islam, gender, and social networks have been decisive in their political victories. Islamic ideas concerning female leadership provide a strong religious foundation for their political campaigns. However, their approach to women's issues shows that female leaders do not necessarily adopt a woman's perspectives when formulating policies. This new trend of Muslim women in politics will continue to shape the growth and direction of democratization in local politics in post-Suharto Indonesia and will color future discourse on gender, politics, and Islam in contemporary Southeast Asia.

An unflinching investigation of the false promises of land sparing, exposing how its illusory successes mask the failures of green capitalism For two decades, the concept of land sparing, the claim that agricultural intensification can spare land by preventing forest clearing for agricultural expansion, has dominated tropical forest conservation. Land sparing policies transform landscapes and livelihoods with the promise of reconciling agricultural development with environmental conservation. But that land sparing promise is false. Based on six years of research on agrarian frontiers in Indonesia, Brazil, and Bolivia, this book traces where and how land sparing becomes policy and charts the social and ecological effects of these political contests. Gregory M. Thaler explains why land sparing appears successful in some places but not in others and reveals that success as an illusion achieved by displacing deforestation to new frontiers. The failure of land sparing exposes a harsh truth behind assurances of green capitalism: capitalist development is ecocide.
