Air can be used in a variety of ways to make lightweight, flexible structures. It can be used to make inflatable structures, mobile structures, and temporary buildings, it can also activate movable elements and act as a means of constructing buildings that would be impossible with conventional construction methods. This book looks at every facet of the subject, examining the different types of air structure: super pressure buildings, air beam structures, buoyant structures, inflatable structures, and many more. It also looks at the construction methods that use air, such as air-inflated steel, aerated concrete and blow moulding. Filled with photographs, models, drawings, and diagrams, this is the ideal book for curious students, designers and architects.
Provides minimum criteria for the design and operation of air-supported membrane structures whether independent of or attached to another structure. This title discusses such topics as: materials and their properties; building systems such as fire protection; design criteria; erection and inflation; and operation and maintenance.
This is a handbook for architects and structual engineers, providing the theory behind pneumatics and describing the advantages of being able to construct buildings that cover vast areas inexpensively. Major pneumatic structures throughout the world are examined, as well historical developments. Technical data is included: membrane characteristics, methods of cutting and joining, stabilisation measures, problems of transport and erection. The book contains diagrams which simplify calculations for cylindrical and sperical membranes.

Since the first publication of this book on multi-story pneumatic and fluid-inflated building structures in 2013 the author has continued research into extensions of the same principles to large span floors and roofs. Whereas the initial focus was on lightweight vertical structures such as air-supported multi-story buildings with flexible plastic membrane enclosures and pressurized thin-walled columns with rigid metal walls, the new research has centered on lightweight horizontal structures. This book is about a very different kind of architecture than the buildings we see around us at the beginning of the 21st Century. It explores the use of air and liquid pressure as the principal structur...
