The Mediality of Sugar
The Mediality of Sugar probes the potential of reading sugar as a mediator across some of the disciplinary distinctions in early twenty-first century research in the arts, literature, architecture, and popular culture. Selected artistic practices and material cultures of sugar across Europe and the Americas from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century are investigated and connected to the transcontinental and transoceanic history of the sugar plants cane and beet, their botanical and cultural dissemination, and global sugar capital and trade under colonialism and in decoloniality. The collection contributes to the vision of a Transnational and Postdisciplinary Sugar Studies.

The drawings that make up Alain Sachas's Jurassic Pork II are done at 12 x 18 inches, then, at exhibition time, blown up to poster size and glued to museum walls. They may, however, be best suited to book form, to life as a comic. As the series opens, our cat hero--and one French critic has suggested Sachas's name be heard "ses chats," or "his cats"--is setting off on the hunt for the big pig, Jurassic Pork. In encountering his id in the woods, he meets Salvador Dali, Jacques Lacan, and a tribe of Amazons in cat-woman style pig suits--or is that a dream? Introducing the concept of music and painting as 'rival sisters' during the nineteenth century, this interdisciplinary collection explores the productive exchange-from rivalry to inspiration to collaboration-between the two media in the age of Romanticism and Modernism. The volume traces the relationship between art and music, from the opposing claims for superiority of the early nineteenth century, to the emergence of the concept of synesthesia around 1900. This collection puts forward a more complex history of the relationship between art and music than has been described in earlier works, including an intermixing of models and distinctions between approaches to them. Individual essays from art history, musicology, and literature examine the growing influence of art upon music, and vice versa, in the works of Berlioz, Courbet, Manet, Fantin-Latour, Rodin, Debussy, and the Pre-Raphaelites, among other artists.
