Edwin G. Lucas was one of the few Scottish artists to experiment with Surrealism in the 1930s. His Surrealist output included numerous oil paintings plus the striking drawings that are the subject of this book. Helen Scott, in her book 'Edwin G. Lucas: An Individual Eye', describes them as "ink sketches of bizarre, humorous and occasionally disturbing scenes, some of which relate to Freudian psychoanalysis". Alan Lucas recalls finding the sketch books when sorting through the contents of his father's studio a few years after his death: "What really struck me were the weird drawings, some with equally weird titles such as 'Puzzle : Wisdom has a Dwelling'. I immediately thought "Wow! these are good". Many of the drawings were made in 1939 and 1940, just before and after the outbreak of war. Most of the others date from 1945 and 1946, the start of the most prolific and innovative period of Lucas's career. These drawings have never been exhibited. This book aims to bring them to a wide audience for the first time.
