Brooke Caldwell is no stranger to Egypt's mythology. Her Egyptologist father raised her on bedtime stories from the Book of the Dead. But the discovery of a 5th dynasty corpse that could pass for her twin leads to perils she never imagined. Thrust into Egypt's underworld by a mysterious stone amulet, Brooke is hailed as the Duat's lost queen. She just wants to go home, but the Duat's immortal rulers have sinister plans for their Isis look-alike. The annoying yet intriguingly attractive Osiris has information that can help her. Unfortunately, he's a foggy dream from Isis's borrowed memories. A handful of the underworld's lowliest citizens have bravely befriended her, but those who offer Brooke help seem to inevitably end up dead. Even if she does manage to return home, a primordial evil has escaped its prison and the powers of Chaos are poised to destroy all creation. As much as she hates it, there seems to be no other choice. Brooke will have to become Isis to save the people she loves.

Lost. Mistaken for a goddess. Trapped in a mythical world. Brooke Caldwell is no stranger to Egypt's mythology. Her Egyptologist father raised her on bedtime stories from the Book of the Dead. But the discovery of a 5th dynasty corpse that could pass for her twin leads to perils she never imagined. Thrust into Egypt's underworld by a mysterious stone amulet, Brooke is mistaken for the Duat's lost queen. Brooke just wants to go home, but the Duat's immortal rulers have other plans for their Isis look-alike. The annoying, yet intriguingly attractive, Osiris has information that can help her. Unfortunately, he's a foggy dream from Isis's borrowed memories. A handful of the underworld's lowliest citizens have bravely befriended her, but they're as mortal and vulnerable as she is. To return to her own world, Brooke must release Isis's trapped memories from a magical stone. This, however, is easier said than done. Only one person - the ancient and mysterious Wadjet - knows how to undo the spells that bind the amulet. And she resides across an impassable lake of fire in a forest of death.

An old enemy returns. Chaos Rises. Two hearts reclaim an ancient love. She didn't want to return to the Duat--she wanted to pretend it never existed--but a primordial evil has escaped its prison, and seventeen year-old Brooke Caldwell must reclaim Isis's throne. At least this time she won't be facing the underworld alone. She's found Osiris, and together they might survive long enough to defeat Apep. Before they can save the world, however, Brooke must acquire Set's dominion scepter. This means stealing from the priceless collection of artifacts her archaeologist father is preparing for exhibition. Dishonesty. Manipulation. She's becoming more and more like Isis, and that's the last thing Brooke desires.

Between Rebels and Rulers in the Early Islamicate World offers the first dedicated examination of the phenomenon of rebellion across the early Islamicate world. It combines discourse analysis with a return to long-neglected social-historical analysis in its study of contention and the ways in which it was narrated and enacted. These approaches are pursued through fourteen case studies, ranging geographically from North Africa to Central Asia and chronologically from the sixth to tenth centuries CE. These diverse examples reveal several patterns: First, rebellion operated as a normative means of negotiating power and obtaining justice. Second, the main constituencies of rebellion were local elites, both Muslims and non-Muslims, Arabs and members of pre-conquest societies, separately or together. Accordingly, this volume challenges the 'othering' of rebels found in written sources and reflected in scholarship and reframes them and their discourses as integral parts of an imperial system. Third, social ties provided a framework for the mobilisation of rebellious constituencies and the resolution of conflict.
