Annotation. There is currently great concern about the sustainability of forestry and the contribution of private forestry towards this aim. The need to better understand the impact of different policy choices on private forestry has never been more important. This book includes a selection of peer-reviewed papers from a conference held in Atlanta in March 2001.

This revised and expanded edition of Colin Price's seminal publication provides a richly comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of landscape economics, a subject which has until now been addressed only in limited aspects. Although much of the book's discussion is based upon natural resources and environmental economics, the author presents a wide and integrative view, drawing from aesthetic, psychological, social and political perspectives and applying a critical use of economic concepts and challenges to different schools of thought on the landscape. This new edition includes new ideas and critiques on environmental valuation; more focused critiques of stated preference methods, political al...

Halcyon

The glistening white pillars of the Blue Star Memorial Temple lead to the federally recognized historic district of Halcyon, founded in 1903 as an intentionally formed community by the Temple of the People. This theosophical group came west from New York to establish a community dedicated to living the principles of unity and brotherhood on the coast of Central California. More than 100 years later, this community continues to thrive. The town was constructed on the principle of form follows function, and some of the homes from the early 1900s still shelter families. Currently, Halcyon covers 130 acres and has 60 buildings. These include the Halcyon Store and Halcyon Post Office, the temple, two meeting halls, and the W.Q. Judge Library. Growth has been limited, and Halcyon has always been protective of its open space, particularly the Builder's Grove Park in the center of town.

A Question of Excellence

Africans show excellence in board games. The players of African descent make up a history of intellectual African accomplishments thus far unnoticed in literature on African history as well as cognitive psychology. A history of African players includes world champions, grand masters, blindfold players and experts at beating computer simulations. This study suggests three criteria of excellence which allow better appreciation of past and present players, illustrating examples of African excellence in a historical context of world events.

One Jump Ahead

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a decade since One Jump Ahead: Challenging Human Supremacy at Checkers was published. I’m delighted to have the oppor- nity to update and expand the book. The ?rst edition ended on a sad note and that was re?ected in the writing. It is now eleven years later and the project has come to a satisfying conclusion. Since its inception, the checkers project has consumed eighteen years of my life— twenty if you count the pre-CHINOOK and post-solving work. It’s hard for me to believe that I actually stuck with it for that long. My wife, Steph, would probably have something witty to say about my obsessive behavior. Rereading the book after a decade w...
