Ottilie W. Roederstein

  • Categories: Art

Anton Henning's art apparently acknowledges no boundaries between genres and style. The artist (*1964 in Berlin) lustfully draws from the value patterns of past eras and revitalizes them in a richly allusive blend. In his subversive march through art history, he regularly links abstract, ornamental stylistic elements with figural motifs and places avant-garde and design, trash, and salon art in a dialectic relationship. This publication presents Anton Henning's work from 1990 to the present for the first time in this scope. Selected works--paintings, drawings, sculptures, objects, and seating furniture--provide insight into the artist's overly ornate and opulent cosmos of images. The survey ranges from Henning's early photo overpaintings and black-and-white pictures, in which he subverted photography's realism by means of deliberate painterly interventions, and the jazz images oriented toward the aesthetics of late-sixties psychedelic art to his ornamental arabesque interiors and pin-ups. Exhibition schedule: Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, Ludwigshafen, and Kunsthalle Mannheim, May 16-August 16, 2009

This remarkable thematic survey offers up an entirely new way of looking at and thinking about Paul Cézanne's oeuvre. As an artist, Paul Cézanne sought to capture the secrets and essence of the world around him--a world he perceived as phenomena constantly in flux. This book explores Cézanne's oeuvre through the lens of that philosophy, thoughtfully organizing individual works into a series of thematic phases. Breaking up pictorial genres, it sheds light on the fluid interplay among the artist's still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. Cézanne's practice of studying and imitating his predecessors and contemporaries is explored as a fundamental feature of his work. It also delves into the artist's reliance on his emotional, rather than objective, perception of reality. Filled with full color reproductions of the artist's famous and lesser-known works, as well as illuminating essays by leading curators and critics, this groundbreaking exploration offers readers an unprecedented appraisal of one of the world's most loved artists.

Discover the sculptures of Impressionism and how they embody the movement's ideals. Is there such a thing as "Impressionist sculpture"? Since 1881 when Edgar Degas presented Little Dancer Aged Fourteen at the Sixth Impressionist Exhibition in Paris, the term has existed along with the discourse around it. This book is dedicated to the extensive examination of the question what it would mean to translate the characteristics of Impressionist painting, such as light, colour, ephemerality, and the ethereal, into sculpture. The book features a selection of artists including Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin, and Medardo Rosso and examines the artistic processes that traverse genres in which one medium is enhanced by others. This valuable, fascinating resource offers a unique addition to the scholarship on the Impressionist era.

Making Van Gogh

Van Gogh is dead, but the van Gogh-chaps are alive! And how alive they are! It is van Goghing everywhere, was how Ferdinand Avenarius described it in 1910 in the magazine Der Kunstwart. Vincent van Gogh's paintings exerted a particular fascination on young artists in Germany at the beginning of the twentieth century. Barely fifteen years after his death the Dutch artist was seen as one of the most important forerunners of modern painting. A selection of key works from all van Gogh's creative phases are juxtaposed with works by Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Gabriele Münter, Karl Schmidt- Rottluff and others. Exhibition: Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, Germany 23.10.2019 - 16.02.2020) / Museum Barberini, Potsdam, Germany (26.10.2019 - 02.02.2020).

Outstanding! The Relief from Rodin to Picasso

The relief is a form of the visual arts situated between painting and sculpture - a hybrid between two- and threedimensional expression that emancipates itself from the surface even as it remains confined to the same. The publication will explore the various manifestations of the relief over a span of more than a century and a half, from 1800 until into the 1960s, during which the medium took on ever greater importance for artists and theorists alike. Whereas in the nineteenth century classical methods of three-dimensional composition and sculptural invention still dominated the production of reliefs, the spectrum broadened in the twentieth to encompass widely differing materials, techniques, and their combinations. The 'construction' of reliefs in the form of collages and assemblages became an outlet for a new conception of space that was not averse to penetrating-or even dissolving-the support surfaces. Artists such as Berthel Thorvaldsen, Paul Gauguin, August Rodin, Henri Matisse, Alexander Archipenko, Pablo Picasso, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, or Gerhard Richter and their works are presented.

Since their exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art, Gert and Uwe Tobias have been two of the shooting stars of the international art scene. The twins are known above all for their large-scale woodcuts featuring motifs borrowed from Eastern European folklore. In parallel with these works, they also produce small drawings characterised by a diverse and innovative style using in some cases acrylic paint, ballpoint pen and collage and in others using only typewriter printing. Their portfolio forms two largely independent series of works and the brothers' oeuvre will be the focus of their first solo exhibition in Ludwigshafen and the subject of this catalogue.
