It: A History of Human Beauty treats outstanding physical attractiveness as a quality or possession, comparable to power, intelligence, strength, wealth, education or family, that had a marked effect on history. Beauty in men and women opened opportunities to its possessors not available to the ordinary looking or ugly. While in the past women have had to use the lure of sex to achieve power or wealth, epitomised by royal mistresses or the Grandes Horizontales of the nineteenth century, modern film stars (male and female) can acquire great wealth simply by the use of their images, while attractiveness on television is an essential modern qualification for power, as shown by Ronald Reagan and Tony Blair.

Continuity and Change in France
First published in 1984, Continuity and Change in France sets out to explore questions by examining the many features of the Giscard presidency which have endured under Socialist rule. Few people predicted the election victory of Francois Mitterrand over Giscard d’ Estaing in May 1981. It was greeted, by his supporters at least, as the first remarkable event in a chain of far-reaching changes which would transform France. However, it has gradually become clear that political change does not come easily to modern France and that continuity is at least as important. This book is at once a valuable review of the 1974- 81 period as well as a revealing account of what has changed since then and what, despite the rhetoric, has not. The contributors cover a number of areas important to French presidency and demonstrate the existence of a surprising degree of continuity in terms of both policy and personnel. They will be welcomed by all students of French politics as providing the basis for a fuller assessment of the successes and shortcomings of the Mitterrand years.

Transactions of the International Astronomical Union
The General Assemblies of the International Astronomical Union are landmarks in the life of the world-wide astronomical community, as they review, at triennial intervals, the progress made in this scientific field, promulgate the most spect acular astronomical achievements, formulate scientific programmes for the years to come and, last but not least, deal with the administration and finances of the IAU. The Reports on Astronomy 1976, published as Transactions XVIA (in 3 volumes) before the XVlth General Assembly, are a synopsis of the work done in astronomy from 1973 to 1975. The volume "Highlights of Astronomy , as presented at the XVlth General As sembly of the IAU in Grenoble, 1976" includes some selected scientific topics, and will appear in the first half of 1977. Apart from the Invited Discourses and the Proceedings of the seven Joint Discussions, the Highlights volume No.4 con tairsthe proceedings of two Joint Commissions Meetings.
