Under a Bilari Tree I Born

Bringing up nine children of your own is a major achievement in itself. Bringing up a further fifteen foster children is truly remarkable … Alice Bilari Smith had lived in the Pilbara all her life, on stations and in the bush, on government reserves and in towns. As a girl on Rocklea Station she narrowly avoided removal from her family by ‘the Welfare’. Instead, Alice learned to cook and launder, sew and clean; shoe horses, chop wood and milk cows. Her working life on stations continued as a young married woman and she added mustering, dingo scalping, shearers’ assistant and sheep-yard building to her skills. Alice Bilari Smith also grew up in the ways of her country, hunting, cooking and building in the traditional manner. Some of her children were born in the bush; others in hospital. By the time she had five children of her own she was playing an active role in caring for other Aboriginal children and she initiated the establishment of a Homemakers Centre in Roebourne. Both a remarkable life and a typical life, Alice’s story is insightful and inspiring.

The collected memoirs of a 1913 San Francisco sex worker, their effect on society at the time, and where they fit in today’s world. In 1913 the San Francisco Bulletin published a serialized, ghostwritten memoir of a prostitute who went by Alice Smith. “A Voice from the Underworld” detailed Alice's humble Midwestern upbringing and her struggle to find aboveboard work, and candidly related the harrowing events she endured after entering “the life.” While prostitute narratives had been published before, never had they been as frank in their discussion of the underworld, including topics such as abortion, police corruption, and the unwritten laws of the brothel. Throughout the series, ...

Short Orchestral Works

One of the most prolific women composers of her time, Alice Mary Smith (1839–84) produced the greatest number of publicly performed large-scale orchestral and choral works of any of her gender. This edition presents three of her short orchestral compositions for the first time in print. The Andante for Clarinet and Orchestra, an orchestral transcription of the slow movement of Smith’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano of 1870, was greatly admired by the English clarinetist Henry Lazarus, who performed it multiple times. The two intermezzi, along with the overture, comprise the complete orchestral music from Smith’s grand choral cantata The Masque of Pandora, a setting of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem. Designed as independent instrumental movements, Smith fully orchestrated the intermezzi for a performance in 1879 by the New Philharmonic Society under William Ganz. In the introduction to the edition, Graham-Jones includes a brief biography of Smith and reproduces numerous reviews and program notes from the various performances of these three works.

As the worldwide prayer movement continues to flourish, never before have so many Christians from so many faith traditions joined together to intercede for so long--in their homes, in their churches, in their communities. As the prayer movement continues to explode, leaders emerge to give guidance to the growing number of intercessors . . . and Alice Smith is at their forefront, leading the leaders who have lifted the banner of passionate, effective intercessory prayer for this generation and the next. In Beyond the Veil, Smith proclaims God's call for His people to pray and shares what she has learned on her own journey toward deeper intimacy with God through prayer. Whether readers are new to intercession or are veteran prayer warriors, they will discover sound, biblical methods for binding the enemy and loosing the Holy Spirit in their families, churches, and nations. Each chapter includes questions and prayer exercises, with a corresponding devotional to bring the principles of intercession to life, making Beyond the Veil the essential guidebook for the prayer revival that is sweeping the globe.

Girl Meets Boy

From the astonishingly talented writer of The Accidental and Hotel World comes Ali Smiths brilliant retelling of Ovids gender-bending myth of Iphis and Ianthe, as seen through the eyes of two Scottish sisters. Girl Meets Boy is about girls and boys, girls and girls, love and transformation, and the absurdity of consumerism, as well as a story of reversals and revelations that is as sharply witty as it is lyrical. Funny, fresh, poetic, and political, Girl Meets Boy is a myth of metamorphosis for a world made in Madison Avenues image, and the funniest addition to the Myths series from Canongate since Margaret Atwoods The Penelopiad.
