The Unknown Journey
A full cup must be carried steadily; in many regards, my cup has overflowed with blessings. I lived most of my life as a public figure, but the most important things I have accomplished were in the shadows when I was alone and could ponder life's meaning. I have endeavored to tell my story with the facts and dates while blending enough narrative to make the journey through these pages enjoyable. Come walk with me through the pages of my life from child to man; from son to parent; from an Army Private washing dishes to a Commanding Brigadier General; from student to teacher; from a sinner lost to a sinner saved. I have been a servant of humanity, a helpmate to one woman, a father, a grandfather, and best of all a friend to God. Enjoy the trip; it is my gift to you. It has been a blessing to walk the unknown journey while trusting in divine providence to lead the way. Most of my traveling is behind me now, but there still lies a measure ahead in my walk through life's honorable path.

I Will Do A New Thing
It all started when Ralph Winter gave an address at Lausanne called “The Unfinished Task,” urging the missions world to focus on a new type of evangelism to reach “hidden” or “unreached” peoples. Soon he and his wife Roberta were founding a center to help mission agencies fulfill that task. Around them gathered a group of experienced missionaries, computer scientists, and unusually dedicated young people in order to buy a college campus. Apostolic Function
The Paradigm of Missionary Identity In the past we have focused on the “why” of missions in terms of motives, the “what” of missions in terms of the content of the message, and the “how” of missions in terms of methodologies and strategies, but the “where” question, in terms of where we send cross-cultural workers, has simply been assumed; it has meant crossing a geographic boundary. In Apostolic Function in 21st Century Missions, Alan R. Johnson introduces the idea of apostolic function as the paradigm of missionary self-identity that reminds us to focus our efforts on where Christ is not named. He then examines in detail the “where” paradigm in missions, frontier mission missiology, with a sympathetic critique and a review of the major contributions of unreached people group thinking. Johnson concludes by illustrating his notion of seeking to integrate missions paradigms and discussing of issues that relate specifically to the “where” questions of missions today.
Peoples and Places
Jesus’s final command to his disciples was to make disciples of all nations. But who are the nations? How do we know we are being obedient to the task? Do our current lists of ethnolinguistic people groups sufficiently answer the question? For the last fifty years, missiologists and missionaries have discussed this topic, but much of the conversation has been focused on definitions that give little attention to biblical theology. When we explore how the Bible describes “the nations,” we find some other categories that have been overlooked, forgotten, or set aside in the development of missions strategy. Geography is one of these categories. However, this is not simply bringing current geo-political entities back into our missions strategy. Instead, Matthew Hirt is calling on missiologists, missions researchers, and missionaries on the field to discover how people groups identify their own geographies and, in turn, how that geography contributes to a people group’s identity.
