"I own an old sampler that is reproduced at the beginning of this book, which relates how needles are part of a woman's 'usefulness.' I started thinking about how needles are not only for that, as old fashioned as that is, but that they also have more painful uses. So, I identified other 'uses' for needles. The book starts off with traditional usage, and then gets more disturbing in the more painful things that needles do. I also wanted each page to look a little like a sampler.
