The Third International Symposium on Cladocera, papers from which make up this volume, covered recent findings on the behaviour, life history, population genetics, reproduction, chemical communication, predator-prey interactions, epibionts, taxonomy, phylogeny, palaeolimnology and biogeography of this animal group. The Cladocera occupy an intermediate position in lake ecosystems, both as plankton and benthic organisms. Their often high abundance and their function, as transfer organisms from algae and dead organic matter to macro-invertebrates and fish, make them one of the most important organisms to affect the biological processes in freshwater ecosystems. The Cladocera living among the plankton often have recognizable distribution patterns and migrations; their size and brief life cycles make them popular in laboratory experiments; their cyclic parthenogenesis makes them suitable for many aspects of population genetics; and they are present as microfossils in lake sediments. All these features confer a unique status on the Cladocera as model organisms in many aspects of modern systematics and ecology.
In this book, scientists from eleven countries summarize the results of an EU project (CLIME) that explored the effects of observed and projected changes in the climate on the dynamics of lakes in Northern, Western and Central Europe. Historical measurements from eighteen sites were used to compare the seasonal dynamics of the lakes and to assess their sensitivity to local, regional and global-scale changes in the weather. Simulations using a common set of water quality models, perturbed by six climate-change scenarios, were then used to assess the uncertainties associated with the projected changes in the climate. The book includes chapters on the phenology and modelling of lake ice, the supply and recycling of nitrogen and phosphorus, the flux of dissolved organic carbon and the growth and the seasonal succession of phytoplankton. There are also chapters on the coherent responses of lakes to changes in the circulation of the atmosphere, the development of a web-based Decision Support System and the implications of climate change for the Water Framework Directive.

This volume combines articles on shallow lakes from leading European scientists in limnology. It covers aspects of the dynamics of macrophytes, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos, nutrient loading, littoral-pelagic interactions, and sediment-water interactions, as well as lake management. The object was not to separate theory (e.g. modelling) and management in order to generate new theories for the understanding of shallow lake ecosystems. The volume provides a comprehensive overview of the ecology of shallow lakes, a lake type which differs in prominent ways from deeper lakes. The broad spectrum of issues may also reflect the spectrum of interested readers such as limnologists, water engineers, hydrobiologists, who will be informed on a high level about new developments.
This volume features papers presented at the International Symposium on the Eutrophication Process and Control in Large Shallow Lakes-–with Special Reference to Lake Taihu, held in Nanjing, China in April 2005. Coverage includes: physical processes and their effects on shallow lake ecosystems; biogeochemistry of sediments and nutrient cycling in shallow lakes; and algal blooms and ecosystem response in shallow lakes.
Since the two previous rotifer symposia in Lunz and Gent were highly successful, it was considered important to continue the tradition every third year. Thus a third rotifer symposium was held in Uppsala, Sweden, Aug. 30-Sept. 4, 1982. In the beginning of 1981 the first circular was mailed to the participants of the previous symposia, who in turn were requested to suggest names of other scientists to be invited. As a result many people expressed interest, about 70 of whom finally participated in the symposium (not including temporary visitors from nearby). Large lakes are important because of their size and ecological distinctiveness as well as their economic and cultural value. Optimal management of them requires a proper understanding of anthropogenic impacts both on the lake ecosystems as such and on the services they provide for society. The specific structural and functional properties of large lakes, e.g. morphology, hydrography, biogeochemical cycles and food-web structure, are all directly related to their size.
