Alvar Aalto

This is a much needed and lively study of the still insufficiently known Finnish modern master Alvar Aalto, whose sensitive and increasingly revelant architectural legacy will surely only increase in stature as the years unfold.--Kenneth Frampton

Aalto is often called the quintessential modernist, and at first glance this appears to be rightly so. The forms are organic, the materials compatible. Yet Aalto is also the master of the ambiguous space and mystery; in one building one senses history but not exactly why, and in another Aalto has combed a curve to create an almost unbearable tensio

Alvar Aalto, born 1898 in Kuortane in Finland, is one of the last of the works personalities of the twentieth century architecture generation. His buildings, from urban planning to simple residential buildings, function as a single organism. He was never interested in formal architectural theories. The path of each building is fascinating, from the first fleeting sketches to the completed work handed over to the client, and strongly defined by the personality of the architect. Everything remains alive and in motion, seems casual and natural as if it grew naturally out of the surroundings. The unique sense for the importance of individual components and construction phases makes it possible to identify a complex of individual style, even in modest construction tasks. Hence, Aalto's designs and experiments result in furniture, lamps, curtains, and many other things that make a house habitable. The central theme of his work is the unity of idea, form, and way of life.

This book uses seven of Alvar Aalto's most notable buildings to illustrate his working methods, his skills and his theories. When I picked it up I was a bit worried: How do you sum up fifty years of steady practice in seven buildings? Well, I got my answer. This is not a summary. Rather than a page or two on the hundreds of buildings & projects Aalto did, this book is an in depth study of a few major works. The essays are wonerful, the photos & sketches are great. A fine look at one of the true masters of the craft.

Alvar Aalto and The Art of Landscape captures the essence of the Finnish architect’s landscape concept, emphasising culture and tradition, which characterised his approach to and understanding of architecture as part of the wider environment. From the forests of his youth to sights from his travels, Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was influenced by outdoor landscapes. Throughout his career, he felt the need to shape the terrain and this became a signature of his architecture. Divided into five chapters, this book traces Aalto’s relationship with landscape, starting with an analysis of his definitions and descriptions of landscape language, which ranged from natural references and biological te...

Drawing on his own experience and intimate knowledge of Nordic architecture in Scandinavia, the author situates Aalto (1898-1976) within the realms of international modernism and Finnish culture, and explores his inspirations: the Finnish landscape and vernacular traditions, Italian domestic architecture, and Greek site planning, as well as the work of architects such as Gunnar Asplund and Le Corbusier. The complete range of Aalto's work is examined through a study of recurring themes and through detailed investigations of key projects. Abundantly illustrated. 10x11.75" c. Book News Inc.
