"Neste volume o leitor encontrará dezoito estudos, sobre a literatura portuguesa do período do Renascimento. Com a excepção do primeiro artigo, acerca dos ermitães de Gil Vicente, todos foram já publicados, ao longo dos anos, em livros e revistas portugueses, ingleses e norte-americanos, sendo o lugar dessa publicação indicada na nota bibliográfica apensa ao volume. Já que os ensaios são o produto de épocas distintas, resolvi não introduzir alterações.
