Ethical Exchanges in Translation, Adaptation and Dramaturgy examines compelling ethical issues that concern practitioners and scholars in the fields of translation, adaptation and dramaturgy. Its 11 essays, written by academic theorists as well as scholar-practitioners, represent a rich diversity of philosophies and perspectives, and reflect a broad international frame of reference: Asia, Europe, North America, and Australasia. They also traverse a wide range of theatrical forms: classic and contemporary playwrights from Shakespeare to Ibsen, immersive and interactive theatre, verbatim theatre, devised and community theatre, and postdramatic theatre. In examining the ethics of specific artistic practices, the book highlights the significant continuities between translation, adaptation, and dramaturgy; it considers the ethics of spectatorship; and it identifies the tightly interwoven relationship between ethics and politics.

We do politics in, through, and as bodies. All our political activity is inevitably corporeal. Parliamentary debates, party assemblies, street demonstrations, and civil disobedience are all bodily actions. Political regimes maintain their power by controlling our bodies, both through explicit acts of violence and, more insidiously, by inculcating somatic norms of obedience to the political authorities and ideologies. This oppression can be effectively challenged if we use somaesthetics to identify and examine the bodily habits and feelings that express and reinforce such domination. Somaesthetically explored, they can be refashioned and help overcome the oppressive social conditions that produce them.

Marie NDiaye s’impose comme l’une des voix les plus intéressantes de la littérature française contemporaine. This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. This collection of works emerges from Interdisciplinary.Net’s second global conference on whiteness entitled Images of Whiteness. True to Interdisciplinary’s ethos, the conference draws scholars and activists from disciplines such as anthropology, education, art, counselling, cultural studies, gender studies, history, and literature, to engage in a dialogue on whiteness: how to see it, resist it, and challenge it. The chapters examine the images and effects of whiteness in literature, film, and television, as well as in ethnographic studies, and provide preliminary guidance to engage in anti-racist praxis and education.
