Registers of the Births, Marriages, and Deaths of the "Eglise Françoise À la Nouvelle York,"

Of the several Huguenot establishments founded in the United States, that of New York is the first in date and, in most respects, the first in importance. The records in this work comprise the existing baptismal, marriage, and death records of the French Church of New York from 1688 to 1804, together with a few other records belonging to the New Rochelle "Annex." Although the records have not been translated into English, the language of the entries is so simple that even those who do not read French can easily understand it. The records of the church cover the important period of immigration after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. An extensive index contains every name in the records, including maiden names of the brides and names of witnesses, sponsors, parents, and pastors. This reprint is excerpted from "Collections of the Huguenot Society of America," Volume 1 (1886).

When he is born in 1847 Vienna, Jacob Pfleger shares just two days with his mother, a female obstetrician who dies, like thousands of other women around the world, of the mysterious childbed fever. Because his birth father wants nothing to do with him, Jacob is placed in an orphanage. His mother’s dying wish is that he will grow up with resilience and independence. As Jacob matures into a precocious twelve-year-old, he is told about the legacy of his mother by her colleague, Ignaz Semmelweis, and learns that his father is a winemaker in Lille, France. Determined to find his father and his destiny, Jacob embarks on a quest to locate him. When he arrives in France, Jacob is introduced to Lou...

Paris, 1889. The World's Fair. The Alchemist is how I've come to think of him; he has a passion for the dark side of knowledge, mixing murder and madness with science. Nellie Bly - reporter, feminist and amateur detective - is in Paris on the trail of an enigmatic killer. The city is a dangerous place: an epidemic of Black Fever rages, anarchists plot to overthrow the government and a murderer preys on the prostitutes who haunt the streets of Montmartre. But it is also a city of culture, a magnet for artists and men of science and letters. Can the combined genius of Oscar Wilde, Jules Verne and Louis Pasteur help Nellie prove a match for Jack the Ripper?
