A systematic examination of classical and non-classical problems for linear partial differential equations and systems of elliptic, hyperbolic and mixed types. Among a number of difficult problems addressed are the Dirichlet and oblique derivative problems for non- uniformly elliptic equations and non-strongly elliptic systems and the Cauchy and Darloux problems for non-strongly hyperbolic systems and hyperbolic equations with parabolic degeneracy on the boundary. Written at a level suitable for undergraduate and graduate students and researchers. Individual price, $89. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Despite the fundamental role played by Reshetnyak's work in the theory of surfaces of bounded integral curvature, the proofs of his results were only available in his original articles, written in Russian and often hard to find. This situation used to be a serious problem for experts in the field. This book provides English translations of the full set of Reshetnyak's articles on the subject. Together with the companion articles, this book provides an accessible and comprehensive reference for the subject. In turn, this book should concern any researcher (confirmed or not) interested in, or active in, the field of bounded integral curvature surfaces, or more generally interested in surface g...
This memoir of Andro (Andrei Vasil'evich) Bitsadze, an outstanding Georgian and Russian mathematician, gives a glimpse into his life, background and career behind the Iron Curtain. Born in 1916 a small alpine village of Tskhrukveti in western Georgia, Andro Bitsadze became a professor at Novosibirsk State University and later at Moscow Lomonosov State University. In 1958 Bitsadze became a corresponding member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and in 1969 he was elected a full member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. Throughout his academic career, Andro Bitsadze wrote extensively on the mathematical theory of elasticity, the theory of functions, the theory of equations of mixed type and the theory of boundary-value problems for elliptical systems of equations. Besides the description of the author's personal life, this book contains graphic description of various aspects of life in the former USSR, unknown or little-known facts about some outstanding scientists, politicians and artists whose paths crossed with Andro Bitsadze, as well as his philosophical reflections on various issues and problems of science, politics, history and life in general.
