Deity, Mantra, and Wisdom

This collection contains four of the most cherished Tibetan Buddhist commentaries on the practices of visualization, mantra recitation, and meditative absorption—elements that form the core of development stage meditation, one of the most important practices of Buddhist Tantra. The texts within this volume—Ladder to Akaniṣṭha, Clarifying the Difficult Points in the Development Stage, The Four Stakes That Bind the Life-Force, and Husks of Unity—are among the most widely studied commentaries on this topic and have formed the basis for spiritual study and practice for centuries. In these eloquent and inspiring translations, Jigme Lingpa, Patrul Rinpoche, and Getse Mahāpaṇḍita explain the fundamental philosophy of the development stage, illuminating its profound insights into the nature of reality and how to utilize these insights through the practice of meditation.

The medical world creates its own culture. This culture, however, would not continue if it were not for our participation. As consumers of health care, the way in which we talk, too, maintains the medical culture as it is. This culture frequently dismisses the wisdom of parents and talks them out of their own sense. We, as parents, co-create a culture that continually diminishes us. This collaboration has disastrous consequences for our children. How many times have you heard about a parent having a particular insight into his/her child only to be dissuaded from the truth by the doctor? What Do the Doctors Say? provides stories from the authors own experience as a mother. As a scholar of communication, she has identified twelve language patterns that are used to create medical culture. The book is written particularly for parents of children with disabilities but may be a useful tool for all consumers of health care.

Katherine Mansfield is one of the greatest names in world literature in the genre of short stories. Early influenced by the impressionism of Russian writer Anton Chekhov, Mansfield developed her own modernist narrative style that has had a significant influence on all subsequent short story art. Her stories are driven by psychological conflicts, depicted with a subtlety and a poetic skewness that give them a life beyond the conventions of language. This book collects no fewer than 75 of Mansfield’s short stories. KATHERINE MANSFIELD, actually Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp (later Murry), was born in 1888 in Wellington, New Zealand, and died in 1923 as a result of her pulmonary tuberculosis at a hospital near Fontainebleau, France. Mansfield left her homeland at the age of 19 and moved to Europe. In London, she established herself as a writer and became friends with Virginia Woolf and D.H. Lawrence. Rumour has it that the latter infected her with the lung disease that became her demise, at the young age of 35.
