Processing Technologies for the Forest and Biobased Products Industries

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April 2010 has shown us that increasing risks and costs have to be accepted to satisfy the increasing demand of material and energy resources from a worldwide perspective. Increasing the recovery of raw materials is one possibility, but another one is increasing efficiency in processing and production. Therefore, the development and improvement of processing technologies is a crucial factor for economic progression. This book contains discussions from the 1st International Conference on Processing Technologies for the Forest and Biobased Products Industries, held in October 2010 at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences Kuchl/Austria. The conference provided a forum for discussions among researchers, producers, and consumers of forest and biobased products and acted as a catalyst for new research on process technologies, on quality control and process improvement, and on new concepts for use by technical managers, operations managers, and business managers. The book presents an overview of new developments in processing technologies in the forest and biobased products industries. (Series: Austria: Forschung und Wissenschaft - Technik)

Textile dyes enhance our environment, bringing colour into our lives. The current range of dyes have been developed to withstand environmental effects, such as degradation by exposure to light and water. However, the industry involved with the application of dyes to textiles has a responsibility to ensure that potential for harm to the environment, for example through residues in waste-streams, and to the consumer is minimised. Written by an international team of contributors, this collection reviews current legislation and key technologies which make textile dyeing more efficient and environmentally friendly. The book begins by detailing European and US legislation relating to textile dyeing...

Handbook of Biophotonics, Volume 3

This new handbook covers the world of biophotonics not only geographically -- with the editors coming from different continents -- but also in terms of content, since the authors come from the whole spectrum of biophotonic basic and applied research. Designed to set the standard for the scientific community, these three volumes break new ground by providing readers with the physics basics as well as the biological and medical background, together with detailed reports on recent technical advances. The Handbook also adopts an application-related approach, starting with the application and then citing the various tools to solve the scientific task, making it of particular value to medical doctors. Divided into several sections, the first part offers introductory chapters on the different fields of research, with subsequent parts focusing on the applications and techniques in various fields of industry and research. The result is a handy source for scientists seeking the basics in a condensed form, and equally a reference for quickly gathering the knowledge from neighboring disciplines. Absolutely invaluable for biophotonic scientists in their daily work.

Handbook of Natural Colorants

Handbook of Natural Colorants Second Edition A detailed survey of a variety of natural colorants and their different applications including textiles, polymers, and cosmetics Colorants describe a wide range of materials such as dyes, pigments, inks, paint, or chemicals, which are used in small quantities but play an important role in many products such as textiles, polymers, food, and cosmetics. As the effects of climate change begin to be felt, there has been a shift in focus in the field to renewable resources and sustainability, and an interest in the replacement of oil-based products with greener substitutions. As the push to adopt natural resources grows, there have been significant deve...

The surface of an object is the first thing we see or touch. Nearly every article or object we encounter at home, in industry, land transportation, aerospace, or the medical field in some way uses an adhesive, a sealant, or a decorative coating. Adhesion science provides the technology and the know-how behind these applications. Recent Advances in Adhesion Science and Technology in Honor of Dr. Kash Mittal is dedicated to Dr. Mittal’s outstanding contributions to the global adhesion community and his achievements in disseminating the science of adhesion. This Festschrift volume contains selected papers from the Special Symposium on Recent Advances in Adhesion Science and Technology held in...

Handbook of Thermoset Plastics

Thermosetting plastics are a distinct category of plastics whose high performance, durability and reliability at high temperatures makes them suitable for specialty applications ranging from automotive and aerospace through to electronic packaging and consumer products (your melamine kitchen worktop is a thermoset resin!). Recent developments in thermoset plastics technology and processes has broadened their use exponentially over recent years, and these developments continue: in November 2011, French scientists created a new lightweight thermoset that is as strong and stable as previous materials yet can be easily reworked and reshaped when heated which makes it unique amongst thermosets an...

Handbook of Thermoset Plastics

Process analysis and process control has attracted increasing interest in recent years. The development and application of process analytical methods is a prerequisite for the knowledge-based manufacturing of industrial goods, and allows for the production of high-value products of defined, constantly good quality. Discussed in this chapter are the measurement principle and some relevant aspects and illustrative examples of online monitoring tools as the basis for process control in the manufacturing and processing of thermosetting resins. Optical spectroscopy is featured as one of the main process analytical methods applicable to, among other applications, online monitoring of resin synthesis. In combination with chemometric methods for multivariate data analysis, powerful process models can be generated within the framework of feed-back and feed-forward control concepts. Other analytical methods covered in this chapter are those frequently used to control further processing of thermosets to the final parts, including: dielectric analysis, ultrasonics, fiberoptics, and fiber Bragg grating sensors.
