"Spanische Grippe", so hieß die verheerendste Grippe- Epidemie der Moderne (300. 000 Tote im Deutschen Reich, bis zu 50 Millionen weltweit) – und zwar, weil als einer der Ersten der spanische König an ihr erkrankte. Während die Schulen im Deutschen Reich und in Frankreich geschlossen und von der Südsee bis Afrika Quarantänen verhängt wurden, versuchten Ärzte weltweit vergeblich, dem Erreger auf die Spur zu kommen. Aderlässe und Blutegel kamen zu neuen Ehren, Heidelberger Pathologen sezierten violett und schwarz verfärbte Leichen mit blutroten Lungen (Tuberkulosekranke wie Franz Kafka traf die Grippe besonders hart), ein bulgarischer Naturheiler braute aus Tollkirschen ein Wundermittel gegen die Kopfgrippe. Und dann gab es auch damals schon infizierte Schweine und Vögel – in einem neuen Vorwort zu dieser Taschenbuchausgabe arbeitet Wilfried Witte weitere Parallelen zwischen den Grippewellen am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts sowie der Schweinegrippe zu Beginn unseres Jahrhunderts heraus.
