Multiscale Methods

This introduction to multiscale methods gives you a broad overview of the methods’ many uses and applications. The book begins by setting the theoretical foundations of the methods and then moves on to develop models and prove theorems. Extensive use of examples shows how to apply multiscale methods to solving a variety of problems. Exercises then enable you to build your own skills and put them into practice. Extensions and generalizations of the results presented in the book, as well as references to the literature, are provided in the Discussion and Bibliography section at the end of each chapter. With the exception of Chapter One, all chapters are supplemented with exercises.

Ordinary Germans in Extraordinary Times

Ordinary Germans in Extraordinary Times

Hildesheim is a mid-sized provincial town in northwest Germany. Ordinary Germans in Extraordinary Times is a carefully drawn account of how townspeople went about their lives and reacted to events during the Nazi era. Andrew Stuart Bergerson argues that ordinary Germans did in fact make Germany and Europe more fascist, more racist, and more modern during the 1930s, but they disguised their involvement behind a pre-existing veil of normalcy. Bergerson details a way of being, believing, and behaving by which "ordinary Germans" imagined their powerlessness and absence of responsibility even as they collaborated in the Nazi revolution. He builds his story on research that includes anecdotes of e...

Dynamical Systems and Numerical Analysis

The first three chapters contain the elements of the theory of dynamical systems and the numerical solution of initial-value problems. In the remaining chapters, numerical methods are formulated as dynamical systems and the convergence and stability properties of the methods are examined.

This book provides a systematic treatment of the mathematical underpinnings of work in data assimilation, covering both theoretical and computational approaches. Specifically the authors develop a unified mathematical framework in which a Bayesian formulation of the problem provides the bedrock for the derivation, development and analysis of algorithms; the many examples used in the text, together with the algorithms which are introduced and discussed, are all illustrated by the MATLAB software detailed in the book and made freely available online. The book is organized into nine chapters: the first contains a brief introduction to the mathematical tools around which the material is organize...

Old Springburn

Pictures of neighbourhood pubs such as the Boundary Bar, along with the area's famous locomotive works, reflect a Springburn in its prime before heavy industry went into decline and many of its tenements were pulled down. Elmvale School, Stobhill Hospital, St Aloysius' Chapel, the Hyde Park and Atlas Works and Hoey's famous department store are among the many well-known local institutions featured here by Andy Stewart, north Glasgow aficionado and author of books on several neighbouring district published by Stenlake.

A First Course in Continuum Mechanics

The modeling and simulation of fluids, solids and other materials with significant coupling and thermal effects is becoming an increasingly important area of study in applied mathematics and engineering. Necessary for such studies is a fundamental understanding of the basic principles of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. This book is a clear introduction to these principles. It is designed for a one- or two-quarter course for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in the mathematical and engineering sciences, and is based on over nine years of teaching experience. It is also sufficiently self-contained for use outside a classroom environment. Prerequisites include a bas...

Play It Again, Sam

This title was originally published in 1998. Play It Again, Sam is a timely investigation of a topic that until now has received almost no critical attention in film and cultural studies: the cinematic remake. As cinema enters its second century, more remakes are appearing than ever before, and these writers consider the full range: Hollywood films that have been recycled by Hollywood, such as The Jazz Singer, Cape Fear, and Robin Hood; foreign films including Breathless; and Three Men and a Baby, which Hollywood has reworked for American audiences; and foreign films based on American works, among them Yugoslav director Emir Kusturica's Time of the Gypsies, which is a "makeover" of Coppola's...

Stuart: A Life Backwards

‘Stuart does not like the manuscript. He’s after a bestseller, “like what Tom Clancy writes”. “But you are not an assassin trying to frazzle the president with anthrax bombs,” I point out. You are an ex-homeless, ex-junkie psychopath, I do not add.’

If ever a book deserved the title of 'Old' then this is it. The Cowcaddens of old has been almost completely obliterated, and Andy Stuart's book starts with a number of pictures of streets in this area that have been completely swept away. Heading away from there he follows a route along Dobbie's Loan, up Garscube Road and up Possil Road past the austere Oakbank Hospital. From there the journey continues to Possilpark, with pictures of the public school, co-op and several views of Saracen Street and Cross. The selection finishes at Lambhill. Some excellent tram photographs by the late W. Douglas MacMillan feature in the book, whilst Andy's informative text brings these now forlorn areas back to life.
