Empirical studies in translation and discourse

The present volume seeks to contribute some studies to the subfield of Empirical Translation Studies and thus aid in extending its reach within the field of translation studies and thus in making our discipline more rigorous and fostering a reproducible research culture. The Translation in Transition conference series, across its editions in Copenhagen (2013), Germersheim (2015) and Ghent (2017), has been a major meeting point for scholars working with these aims in mind, and the conference in Barcelona (2019) has continued this tradition of expanding the sub-field of empirical translation studies to other paradigms within translation studies. This book is a collection of selected papers presented at that fourth Translation in Transition conference, held at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona on 19–20 September 2019.

They came from Burgundy

The first book to recount the stories of every single Allied serviceman (including more than a hundred and fifty American aircrew) helped by one of the major escape lines of World War Two, complete with details of their helpers. Escape lines – which should more properly be called evasion lines – can be described as organisations that helped stranded servicemen make their way from enemy occupied territories back to friendly territory. Of the three major escape lines running through France during the Second World War – the Pat O’Leary line, which covered most of the country, the Comete line, which ran from Holland and Belgium through France to the Pyrenees, and Bourgogne – Bourgogne ...

The growth and impact of the multinational enterprise (MNE) in the post war period is one of the most important phenomena of our time. This volume, originally published in 1981 provides a comprehensive and detailed review of both the theoretical and policy issues at a time when the subject had reached a watershed, after the controversies of the 1970s. The book provides a balanced discussion of major themes such as the development of modern theories of international production; the impact of the MNE on the nation-state and the structure of the international market; the response of governments and the appropriate framework for policy measures; and the historical context and likely future of the MNE.

The following analysis illustrates the underlying trends and relationships of U.S. issued patents of the subject company. The analysis employs two frequently used patent classification methods: US Patent Classification (UPC) and International Patent Classification (IPC). Aside from assisting patent examiners in determining the field of search for newly submitted patent applications, the two classification methods play a pivotal role in the characterization and analysis of technologies contained in collections of patent data. The analysis also includes the company’s most prolific inventors, top cited patents as well as foreign filings by technology area.

In the picturesque coastal village of Graniteport, Maine, Ned Bailey savors the view of his empire from his home built on a bluff above the harbor. Bailey - the self-proclaimed king of Graniteport - and the elders preserve village traditions based on man's law and a belief that people from away are dangerous and to be avoided and that those of French Canadian ancestry are inferior and to be shunned. Mae Horvath has been in the village for almost twenty years. Hopeful, loyal, and indomitable, Mae is fierce about being an American whose ethnicity happens to be Chinese. When she falls in love with Roy Slade, an attorney from away who settled in the village, it triggers an abhorrence of people violating what Bailey calls the natural order and jealousy on the part of her former husband, Sean. But everything changes when Roy's daughter and her husband visit Graniteport and make a fateful decision. In this gripping thriller, a deadly tragedy in an insular coastal village results in a cycle fueled by bigotry, hatred, love, renewal, and the emptiness of revenge as secrets are exposed and a town's people are forever transformed.

Jesus in the Lotus

Drawing on a deep knowledge of Christian scripture as well as Hindu philosophy, musician and teacher Russill Paul reveals that the mystical core of religion offers us much more than the simple solace of unthinking dogma. By demonstrating that these two seemingly separate and irreconcilable religions can actually unite in one person’s spiritual practice at the center of his life — as they did in his — he offers an alternative to religious intolerance and strife, as well as hope for personal liberation.
