There was a time, not so long ago, when the FA Cup really mattered. When fans would go to extraordinary lengths to get tickets for Wembley and when the biggest teams of the day saw the FA Cup as a 'must have' rather than a 'nice to have.' The 1970s was, quite simply, a fantastic decade for the most famous domestic competition in the world, a decade in which the wonderful 'David and Goliath' stories which were the very essence of the Cup, at last spread themselves to the final itself. Of course, football fans everywhere know the stories. The famous goals by the likes of Porterfield, Stokes, George, Webb and Osborne. The saves by Montgomery, the misses by Macdonald, the flukes by Greenhoff and...
The Leo Frank case of 1913 was one of the most sensational trials of the early twentieth century, capturing international attention. Frank, a northern Jewish factory supervisor in Atlanta, was convicted for the murder of Mary Phagan, a young laborer native to the South, largely on the perjured testimony of an African American janitor. The trial was both a murder mystery and a courtroom drama marked by lurid sexual speculation and overt racism. The subsequent lynching of Frank in 1915 by an angry mob only made the story more irresistible to historians, playwrights, novelists, musicians, and filmmakers for decades to come. Matthew H. Bernstein is the first scholar to examine the feature films ...
As a photographer I am always aware that faces ... especially eyes ... have a story to tell. As a writer, I often call up the visual image to lead me into a descriptive narrative. When I photographed these children in 1971, their faces had a story to tell. I believe I have that story in my novel, "Such Sweet Sorrow." This suspense thriller is set in the hills of East Tennessee. The story begins when a rural school teacher's seven-year-old student, Donna-Dean Silcox, says she has been told not to come home from school. This situation ultimately leads to the discovery by the County Sheriff, of an "outlandish" murder. The Sheriff quickly endears himself to the child, to the teacher, and to the reader. This piece of Southern fiction keeps you turning pages through cliff-hanging chapters.
Like Elvis, David Mills has left the building. It was a few short months ago, near closing time at the Tradewinds Lounge in St. Augustine, Florida, when he announced to the crowd Im going to find my fortune in the uranium fields of west Texas! They say its just lying around on the ground out there and all you have to do is pick it up! And he hasnt been seen since. Sadly, before he disappeared, no one had the opportunity to explain to him that there was no such thing as uranium fields in West Texas. In his absence, we hope you enjoy this, his third helping of Scattered Thoughts.

Jordan begins with the heirloom tomato, inquiring into its botanical origins in South America and its culinary beginnings in Aztec cooking to show how the homely and homegrown tomato has since grown to be an object of wealth and taste, as well as a popular symbol of the farm-to-table and heritage foods movements. She shows how a shift in the 1940s away from open pollination resulted in a narrow range of hybrid tomato crops. But memory and the pursuit of flavor led to intense seed-saving efforts increasing in the 1970s, as local produce and seeds began to be recognized as living windows to the past.
Black and White Knight: How Sir Bobby Robson Made Newcastle United Again is a story of rebirth and redemption. Fractured, disillusioned and second bottom in the Premier League, the Magpies were heading one way under Ruud Gullit: down. The magic of Kevin Keegan's 'Entertainers' era was a distant memory, but in September 1999, Sir Bobby Robson, a son of County Durham, returned home and became a catalyst for change. Talisman Alan Shearer was smiling and scoring, and everyone was dreaming again. Three years later, Newcastle qualified for the Champions League, where they went toe-to-toe with the likes of Inter Milan, Barcelona and Juventus, making history on an amazing journey and playing a brand of football full of energy, verve and attacking intent. A genius in man-management, Sir Bobby's experience and aura gave the club its soul back; Black and White Knight details how he mended divisions and massaged egos to make Newcastle everyone's second favourite team once again.
