Persecuted, banned, and exiled, the legendary Argentine folk singer Mercedes Sosa made South America's dictators tremble in the 1970s. Nicknamed, "The Voice of the Voiceless", Sosa became an icon of democracy and a much-loved mother of Latin America. Mercedes Sosa - The Voice of Hope charts Sosa's remarkable life and career and offers a psychological profile that reveals the secret behind Sosa's enormous impact. Besides being a personal profile of the artist and a chronicle of Latin American music, history, and politics, the author explores the scientific underpinnings of how her profound connection with Sosa and Sosa's music changed her life. By doing so, Christensen opens an avenue to personal transformation that is accessible to anyone. Sosa's extraordinary example, coupled with Christensen's inspiring discoveries will enable the reader to use life's challenges as a stepping stone for growth. This narrative calls out for the best in all of us--for authenticity, empathy, and compassion.
At a time when a woman--Angela Merkel--is arguably the most powerful leader in Europe and another--Hilary Clinton--continues to be at the center of the US political stage, it seems that women have broken through the glass ceiling and begun to populate the highest offices of the political world. Women of Power is a testament to that accomplishment, offering the most comprehensive overview of female presidents and prime ministers to date. Looking at over fifty countries and over seventy women leaders since 1960, Torild Skard--herself an experienced politician--examines how and why these women rose to the top and what their leadership has meant for women's empowerment throughout the latter half...
How ecological design emerged in Scandinavia during the 1960s and 1970s, building on both Scandinavia’s design culture and its environmental movement. Scandinavia is famous for its design culture, and for its pioneering efforts toward a sustainable future. In Ecological by Design, Kjetil Fallan shows how these two forces came together in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Scandinavian designers began to question the endless cycle in which designed objects are produced, consumed, discarded, and replaced in quick succession. The emergence of ecological design in Scandinavia at the height of the popular environmental movement, Fallan suggests, illuminates a little-known reciprocity between ...
Demographic change in Europe has been a topic of great public and political interest since the 1990s. The central aim of this book is to create new questions for research by connecting the topics of demographic change, of the restructuring of the welfare state and of change in gender relations. The articles have a closer look at the interrelation of these social and political changes by highlighting different national situations as well as different theoretical and empirical aspects. They try to reframe the 'problem' of demographic change by analyzing it in the context of gender and welfare state transformations.

Analyzing the political culture of the social-democratic Scandinavians, the conservative Germans, and the liberal British, this book charts the interrelation between medicine and sexual morality, and debates the influence of gender, sexuality, and religion on policies geared toward combatting venereal diseases. With in-depth studies of parliamentary discussions covering all of the late 19th and 20th centuries, it answers questions such as How much attention did national legislation pay to medical opinions? How did governments in five Northern European countries act to restrain the spread of venereal disease? and How did legislation in Scandinavian countries differ from German and British legislation? Thorough and informative, this examination will especially interest historians, sociologists, social anthropologists, ethnologists, and medical researchers.
