The Quest for Survival After Franco
This book engages with a central yet hitherto neglected dimension of the transition to democracy in Spain. It examines the emergence and development of Moderate Francoism from 1964, the year when the Law of Associations was introduced, until 1977, the year of the first democratic elections. The role of the reformists was one of the factors that made possible the dismantling of the dictatorship and was of crucial importance in making possible a bloodless transition to democracy. They acted as a bridge between the regime hard-liners and the democratic opposition, paving the way for King Juan Carlos to implement the 1976 Reform Law that swept away the structures of Francoism. This volume presents the first full English translation of four key texts from the dispute between Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda and Bartolomé de las Casas regarding the justice of Spain's invasion of the Americas, culminating in their famous debate in Valladolid in 1550-51. An impassioned defence of the invasion, Sepúlveda's Democrates secundus (composed around 1544) amplified the controversy within Spain about the justice of its activities in the Americas. Este trabajo sobre Cuadernos para el Diálogo no agota el estudio de esta riquísima fuente, sino que la utiliza para abordar una cuestión mal conocida como es el papel socializador desempeñado por la oposición democristiana en el mesofranquismo y los detalles de su programa o modelo político entre los años 1963 y 1969 en que Cuadernos fue la más significativa y completa, aunque no la única, tribuna de expresión de los democristianos. La oposición representada por éstos en la etapa estudiada, no está suficientemente investigada, lo que resulta tanto más llamativo cuanto que a la altura de los años 60 los democristianos parecían, según las encuestas disponibles, una alternativa política plausible a la Dictadura.
