"The Island of Scarp lies off the west coast of North Harris in the Outer Hebrides and was populated for more than 400 years until 1971, when the last of the native population left. This account of Scarp describes an island community and a way of life now all but forgotten, including the harvests of the land and the sea; children's games and pastimes; long traditional folktales told around the peat-fire; social customs and occasions; and some of the notable characters of the day. It fills a long-felt gap, for the story of Scarp - unlike its westerly neighbour St. Kilda - has not been told in this way before."--BOOK JACKET.

Hardy Ornamental Flowering Trees and Shrubs

Hardy Ornamental Flowering Trees and Shrubs by Angus Duncan Webster ABELIA CHINENSIS (syn A. rupestris).-The Rock Abelia China, 1844. This is a neat, twiggy shrub, growing from 2 ft. to 3 ft. high, with slender shoots, and very pleasing, shining green serrated leaves. The tubular, sweet-scented flowers are produced in clusters at the ends of the shoots, even the smallest, and are of a very delicate shade of pink-indeed, almost white. It makes an excellent wall plant, but by no means refuses to grow and flower freely without either shelter or protection, provided a fairly rich and well drained soil is provided. From August to October is the flowering period of this handsome deciduous shrub. T...

A Highland Moon Enchantment

Irish warrior, Desmond O'Quinlan has never surrendered his heart to any woman. He has no wish to have his soul tortured by love. Yet, the moment he locks gazes with Ailsa, his fate is destined for an adventure he never fathomed. He may have battled alongside a Dragon Knight, but his greatest challenge will come from within his own heart. Ailsa MacDuff, a warrior among her clan, has no desire to have a man chain her to a life of obedience. However, that is before she meets Desmond. The temptation to allow this warrior inside her heart is a risk she dares to take, but one that could lead to a future of emptiness and sorrow. When betrayal looms from within, the battleground of love is no match for these two warriors. Can the power of a Highland full moon be strong enough to unite or destroy them?
