The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, Volume 16 (Translation Supplement)

A translation of selected non-English texts included in Volume 16 is available in paperback. Since this supplementary paperback includes only select portions of Volume 16, it is not recommended for purchase without the main volume. Every document in The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein appears in the language in which it was written, and this supplementary paperback volume presents the English translations of select portions of non-English materials in Volume 16. This translation does not include notes or annotations of the documentary volume and is not intended for use without the original language documentary edition, which provides the extensive editorial commentary necessary for a full historical and scientific understanding of the documents.

Paula Johnson always claimed money doesn’t influence choice, but is it true? When notified of an unexpected inheritance she is shaken. Crying, she wondered if it was over Charley’s death or for the lost innocence of those bohemian years in Paris…counter-culture indeed, revolutionaries of peace. ‘What a message we gave our kids…They were presented with drugs and sexuality as a recreational sport and advertising tool; of race and class as a primary identity instead of as pieces of the whole. We intended to give them freedom to define themselves. Instead our generation only confused them.’ She had dated since her husband died. The fact of being a white woman who had married a black man was part of her identity that put her in unspoken limbo. She missed the years with Roy…when something about their alchemy together prevented any prejudice they encountered from touching them…it only scraped the surface. Lack of money could no longer be her excuse for accepting limited relationships and addictive behavior. The years suddenly knit together as a Cat’s Cradle when pulling the strands tight…Fullness of heart…pervaded her senses.

The Scribes For Women's Convents in Late Medieval Germany

While there has been a great tradition of scholarship in medieval manuscripts, most studies have focused on the details of manuscript production by male copyists. In this study, Cynthia J. Cyrus demonstrates the prevalence of manuscript production by women monastics and challenges current assumptions of how manuscripts circulated in the late medieval period. Drawing on extensive research into the surviving manuscripts of over 450 women's convents, the author assesses the genres common to women's convent libraries emphasizing a social rather than a codicological understanding of how manuscripts of women's libraries came to be copied. An engaging mix of biography, women's history, and book history, The Scribes for Women's Convents in Late Medieval Germany will change the way medieval manuscripts are understood and studied.
