One half-century later, the catastrophic ramming of the MS Stockholm into the Italian luxury liner the SS Andrea Doria in 1956 is relived in this candid, heartrending account. Author Pierette Domenica Simpson, who, with her grandparents, survived the tragedy off the shoals of Nantucket, shares the human and technical aspects of what has become known as the greatest sea rescue in history. As only an eyewitness can do, the author presents survivors' recollections in dramatic vignettes that meticulously re-create a horrific event-one that could have been another Titanic. Both poor immigrants and wealthy travelers give their accounts of ultimate despair and infinite elation after staring at their own reflections in the black ocean that night and seeing death stare back. Equally dramatic are the revelations of new facts exposed by nautical experts from two continents facts that solve the "mystery" of who was to blame for this most improbable collision between two ships on the open seas.
American Opera Singers and Their Recordings
This book focuses on American opera singers and what their recordings say about their artistry. It is not a book about all American opera singers, since many who had important careers on stage, made few, if any, recordings. And many of those who did make recordings, did so prior to the introduction of electrical recording in 1925 (and the resulting advances in the reproduction of the human voice). Opera enthusiasts can only imagine the sound of Farinelli's voice or read what his contemporaries have written about it, but with almost any famous or near-famous singer of recent years, enthusiasts do not have to imagine. Their voices are available through the technology of sound recording. There are 53 entries, one each for 52 singers and a composite entry for a group of Hollywood vocalists. Each entry contains biographical information and is followed by a discography of operatic recordings to be used in conjunction with the critical commentaries. The entries are in alphabetical order by the singer's last name and provide critical analyses of key recordings and of the artists' gifts and limitations.

Mountainous Human Settlements in Guizhou
The research presented in this book examines Guizhou ethnic minority settlements located in the eastern part of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, in the southwest of China. The specificity and the relevance of these settlements, therefore, refers to a combination of anthropological, architectural, environmental issues. Guizhou is a province of ethnic groups since thousands of years engaged in farming or semi-nomadic production. These ethnic minority settlements were self contained and balanced communities which gradually developed their own specific and unique culture of farming, settling and inhabiting. As many precious and valuable historical human settlements still standing around the world, whose architecture and urban features are not easily replicable for culture, skills, social and economic conditions, the Guizhou ethnic minority settlements are tangible architectural heritage – including intangible values – experiencing high risks due to their unavoidable physical decay, demography, urban development pressure.
