Arrival Neighborhoods in Europe since the mid-19th Century

This book uses the concept of "arrival spaces" to examine the relationship between migration processes, social infrastructures, and the transformation of urban spaces in Europe since the mid-19th century. Case studies cover cities from London to Palermo and from Antwerp to St. Petersburg, including both metropolises and small towns. The chapters examine the emergence of settlement patterns, the functioning of arrival infrastructures, and the public representations of neighborhoods which have been shaped by internal or international migrations. By understanding these neighborhoods as spaces of arrival and as infrastructural hubs, this volume offers a new perspective on the profound impact of migration on European cities in modern and contemporary history. This volume makes a valuable contribution to both migration research and urban history and will be of interest to researchers and students studying the relationship between cities and migration in Europe’s past and present.

Early Families of Herkimer County, New York

In 1723 a number of Palatine families were allowed to take up lands in the Mohawk Valley of New York. Those settling in the bounds of the present county of Herkimer were known as the Burnetsfield Patentees, after the name of the grant made by New York Governor William Burnet, and are the subject of this formidable work. This book deals with the families established in the area before the Revolution, and detailed genealogies are given for almost 100 of them.

History of Fresno County, Vol. 5

The editor and publisher of these volumes, which include not less than several hundred biographies spread across the six books, presents them confidently as a verified and authoritative history of the county - the result of conscientious labor in original research , and of information imparted by pioneers and their descendants , entered upon originally as a pastime and without thought of publication of the collated material. It essays to present county and city historical data that had lasting bearing on the times, but which with many of the picturesque incidents were ignored or overlooked in the publications that have gone before; and lastly it is an endeavor also to fill in the hiatus of t...
