In this first issue of “Nectar,” the Universal Mother’s transcendent wisdom, we offer articles on Vedanta, on Sufi Meditation, and teachings from the Tantric Wisdom of Mother India. There is an article on Nondual Judaism focused on Jewish spiritual practice, and of course the “Wisdom Facets from the Gem of Truth,” teachings from our SRV ideal — Sarada, Ramakrishna and Vivekananda — whose matchless love and wisdom will grace every future issue. In all these articles, indivisible unity, called Advaita or nondualism, is greatly emphasized. This is one of the aims of our SRV journal, to show that all practice along the spiritual path can and should be undertaken with the fore-knowledge of our essential oneness with God. As my guru used to tell me, “Grace and self-effort must go hand in hand.” Human beings are expressions of God, pure and perfect by nature, but the mind needs to know this. This knowing is called Enlightenment, Illumination, Liberation or Self-realization and cannot be feigned, nor can the integrity of the path leading to It be compromised.
Walking the Wisdom Path
Swami Aseshananda lived and taught in America for some forty years; he was Sri Sarada Devi’s last living monastic disciple up until his passing in 1996. He imbibed both the transcendent viewpoint of Advaita Vedanta and the practical teachings of Christianity in his life, combining them into a transformative message for the Western culture and the world at large — which he gave out untiringly and unstintingly for the many years of his blessed lifetime. His presence conferred galvanizing inspiration; his words from the podium conveyed powerful vibrations; his daily puja up through his ninetieth year transmitted countless blessings. His divine utterances and selfless actions during a life of complete commitment are still vibrating in the hearts and minds of the devotees. My Homage to All
Kanan Devi, one of the early singing stars, came into the film world in the silent era and, unlike many others, survived the transition to talkies. Reduced to working as a domestic help after the death of her father, her life took a dramatic turn when she was offered a film role and, encouraged by her uncle, took it. In this lively and candid account of her experiences (originally published in 1973 as Shobarey Aami Nomi), Kanan Devi recalls the early days of cinema in Bengal, analysing and comparing conditions of film acting in the early 1930s with what she saw about two or three decades later when she herself was a producer and director, with her own film company, Shrimati Pictures. This fascinating and unusual story offers not only a different perspective on the growth of the film industry in Bengal but also a first hand account of the position of women who came into the public sphere in the early decades of the last century. The Mystic Wisdom of Kabir
In Indian religious history, Kabir is unique. To the Hindus, he is a Vaishnava Bhakta, to the Muslims, a Pir, to the Sikhs, a Bhagat, to the Kabirpanthis, an Avatar, and to the modern patriots, he is a champion of Hindu-Muslim unity. He is seen as a promoter of universal religion who opposed superstitious beliefs and empty rituals. This book is a compilation of Kabir’s works—songs and verses—which are very popular with the masses, and in religious circles. The English translation is rendered by Swami Brahmeshananda, a senior monk of the Ramakrishna Order. This selective compilation amply represents Kabir’s ideology.
