Three consecutive generations of Habsburg princes and princesses spent part of their early lives in Mechelen, a fiefdom of the Habsburg Netherlands and an important centre for politics, culture, and early childhood education in the 15th and 16th centuries. Other powerful families from all over Europe also sent their children to Mechelen - the most famous is perhaps Anne Boleyn, who later became Queen of England. This catalogue documents an exhibition of children's portraits, manuscripts, toys, jewellery, and educational treatises from Mechelen, illuminating the historical, pedagogical, and artistic background of these works. Included here are early childhood portraits by well known artists, including Jan Gossart, Berard van Orley, and Juan de Flandes and educational tracts by Erasmus and Juan Luis Vives. Dorestad was the largest town of the Low Countries in the Carolingian era. This book presents new research into the Vikings at Dorestad, assemblages of jewelry, playing pieces and weaponry from the town, recent excavations at other Carolingian sites in the Low Countries, and the use and trade of glassware and broadswords.

In July 2014, the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden hosted the second Dorestad congress, exactly five years after the first. This congress was attached to the exhibition Golden Middle Ages: The Netherlands in the Merovingian World, 400-700 AD and brought together scholars to discuss these 'Dark Ages', their burials and settlements, rituals and identities, and the position of the Low Countries in the world-wide networks of early-medieval Europe. The congress opened with a keynote lecture by dr. Gareth Williams (The British Museum). Sessions were devoted to key themes like early-medieval identity and agency, so-called royal burials in Europe, significant find categories like garnets, coins and Merovingian glass, important new sites and finds from the Low Countries and recent work in the Carolingian vicus famosus of Dorestad.
