Processing of Slender Concrete Shells - Fabrication and Installation

Processing of Slender Concrete Shells - Fabrication and Installation

Lightweight structures and material optimized systems are of major relevance in the building industry and particularly in the design of concrete structures. This is not only for aesthetic reasons, but also to use material in a resource conserving way. The increase of strength characteristics, as one measure to reduce cross section dimensions, postulates the prefabrication of cementitious materials under laboratory conditions. This thesis examines the contradiction of the possibility to realize slender concrete elements and the complexity of the discontinued homogeneity arising from necessary segmentations. Proposals of implementation strategies are demonstrated and verified on the basis of selected case studies.

Informed Form Generation

Over the past decades we witnessed a tremendous shift in the principles of architectural design based on the advancement of computer aided design and manufacturing. Computation in architecture came with a whole new set of techniques as well as theories that did change the way we build and design today. This research investigates ways to embed computational simulation and optimisation into architectural design processes at an early, conceptual stage. Simulation and optimization are not seen as a post-design strategy to improve performance aspects of a well-developed design, but rather as design strategies in their own rights. Therefore, design approaches employing simulation and optimization ...

Flexible Forming for Fluid Architecture

Flexible Forming for Fluid Architecture

This book on flexible formwork for fluid architecture is a multi-faceted research that covers a broad field: from design to material and technology, and from history to future developments. It offers a pragmatic approach that can be extended with more cases, materials, techniques and methods for fluid architecture, and provides a better understanding of the main aspects of fluid architecture and to help them find the most suitable combinations of all aspects. The book is a challenging experience with many new discoveries, including two patents: one on moulding of fluid surfaces and one on 3D printing of fibre–reinforced ice. It also features two world records: the larges span (30 meters) and the highest thin shell structure (30,5 meters) in ice as well as a method for the construction of a fully laminated shell structure in insulated glass.

FABRIC[ated]

FABRIC[ated] examines fabric as a catalyst for innovation, reflection, change and transformation in architecture. This book explores the ways in which research and development of fabric can, and historically has, influenced and revolutionized architecture, teaching and design. Responsive, flexible, impermanent, fluid and adaptive—fabric interacts with, and influences architecture, offering innovative solutions and increased material responsibility. Foundation and theory chapters establish clear precedent and futures for fabric’s position in architectural discourse. The case study section examines 14 international projects through three different threads: Veiling, Compression and Tension....

Concrete is the most used man-made material in the world and is the fundamental physical medium for most of the world’s architecture and construction. The character of concrete is largely the product of the rigid moulds that have shaped it since its invention in antiquity. The advent of flexible moulds, however, marks a radical break from conventional practice – and conventional concrete architecture. The Fabric Formwork Book provides the first comprehensive handbook on the emerging technology of flexible moulds for reinforced concrete architecture. Written by the foremost expert in the field, this book takes a comprehensive and generous approach that includes technical, historical and t...

The discipline of architecture is currently undergoing a significant change as professional practice and academia seem to be transforming one another specifically through succinct research undertakings. This book continues the discussion started in The Changing Shape of Practice – Integrating Research and Design in Architecture on architectural offices’ modes of research and lines of inquiry in architecture and how it reshapes practice. The book aims to contribute to the mapping and discussion on research in architectural practice and its transformational impact and gives input to the discussions on where the architectural profession is heading. In this second volume, various research in...

Renovation & Transformation' is a new book from Vandkunsten Architects. It covers nine current renovation projects in the form of renovations of monotonous concrete buildings, transformations of so-called ?ghetto areas?, large-scale renovations of 1001 sheds with focus on process and recycling, as well as business- and cultural houses that are transformed and upgraded to new and longer lives. Each project is presented with a short text, images, illustrations and drawings.0The book is part of a series of publications about the current projects of the studio, which are representative of its work throughout the years. Its intention is to inspire others in the business ? architects, builders, advisors, students, and so on ? through a somewhat more in-depth introduction to some of the projects of the studio.

Fabric-cast concrete involves casting concrete in forms made with flexible formwork. This provides the potential to produce forms that are both structurally efficient and architecturally exciting in a relatively inexpensive and practical manner. By careful shaping of the fabric it is possible to produce complex shapes that would otherwise be difficult and expensive to produce using conventional formwork systems. This book contains six essays that describe the collaboration between the Universities of Edinburgh and East London, together with the Centre for Architectural and Structural Technology (CAST) at the University of Manitoba, in their detailed and practical research into concrete casting and formwork. Richly illustrated with photographs and diagrams and containing new and innovative research this book offers the architect, engineer and student inspiration and technical guidance in this re-emerging material.
