Shine allures and awakens desire. As a phenomenon of perception shiny things and materials fascinate and tantalize. They are a formative element of material culture, promising luxury, social distinction and the hope of limitless experience and excess. Since the early twentieth century the mass production, dissemination and popularization of synthetic materials that produce heretofore-unknown effects of shine have increased. At the same time, shine is subjectified as “glamor” and made into a token of performative self-empowerment. The volume illuminates genealogical as well as systematic relationships between material phenomena of shine and cultural-philosophical concepts of appearance, illusion, distraction and glare in bringing together renowned scholars from various disciplines.

Der Autor Günter Porth, geboren 31.8.1956 in Dahn/Pfalz, studierte nach seinem Abitur 1976 vier Semester Germanistik und ev. Theologie. Nach Abbruch seines Studiums und verschiedenen Gelegenheitsiobs absolvierte er 1980 bis 1982 eine Banklehre und studierte dann zwei Jahre Betriebswirtschaft an der FH der Deutschen Bundesbank. Nach seinem Abschluss war er in den Filialen der Bundesbank in Mainz, Pirmasens, Cottbus, Weimar und Erfurt tätig. 2020 trat er in den Ruhestand und lebt nun mit seiner Frau Anne und Familie in Pirmasens. This is the autobiography of an 'ordinary' life, that of a bank employee and his family; but some things are out of the ordinary. Thomas Hirschhorn
Thomas Hirschhorn, a leading installation artist whose work is owned and exhibited by modern art museums throughout Europe and the United States, is known for compelling, often site-specific and interactive environments tackling issues of critical theory, global politics, and consumerism. His work initially engages the viewer through sheer superabundance. Combining found images and texts, bound up in handcrafted constructions of cardboard, foil, and packing tape, the artworks reflect the intellectual scavenging and sensory overload that characterize our own attempts to grapple with the excess of information in daily life. Christina Braun, the first to compile and systematically analyze the extensive source material on this artist's theoretical principles, sheds light on the complicated yet constitutive relations between Hirschhorn's work and theory. Her study, now translated into English, makes a major contribution to the study of contemporary art.

As a child, the artist, together with her sisters, painted her heroines, princesses and saints, which she now has transferred into reality as a collection of brightly colored outfits full of bizarre details. On the bodies of old ladies the tailor-made fantasies come to life. The publication presents the entire spectrum of the project: from childlike, unconstrained drawings to photographs of the costumed models in front of the sterile backdrop of their senior citizens' residencies and the lifelike fashion shows. A humorous as well as a critical approach to the context of childhood dreams and the age of reality, in which the unresolved questions of an aging society always resonate.
