Industrialization is an integral part of economic development process. Its importance is such that for some countries, or rather their governments, it is synonymous with development. However, the special characteristics of developing countries, their differing resources, their geographical location and even the political and philosophical leanings of their leaders are the factors which cause industrialization to be viewed in different lights as an instrument of development. Thus, industrialization may be the result of a consistent industrial policy in which it is regarded either as the prime mover of development or as one of the components of harmonious and balanced development at sector level. It may also be the natural culmination of a development process of which the originating forces are either eternal to the country’s economic system or to the industrial sector. Industrialization is clearly only part of that unified strategy.

This book takes a long-run view of the global maritime trade of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia from 1700 to American Independence in 1776. Land argues that the three cities developed large, global networks of maritime commerce and exchange that created tension between merchants and the British Empire which sought to enforce mercantilist policies to constrain American trade to within the British Empire. Colonial merchants created and then expanded their mercantile networks well beyond the confines of the British Empire. This trans-imperial trade (often considered smuggling by British authorities) formed the roots of what became known as the American Revolution.

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the distribution of public money and its political and societal implications. Drawing on evidence from central and eastern Europe, it offers an innovative insight into public responses to various strategies of public spending. Given that public expenditures are funded mainly from tax revenues, it also assesses public attitudes to politically motivated allocations of funds. The book seeks to identify how people evaluate the material benefits of funding in light of the fairness - or lack thereof - of the distribution process, whether popular acceptance of variations in public spending depends on the framing of the beneficiaries, and the implications of money allocation for political trust in political institutions.
