Gardens of Colombia

Unlike architecture, sculpture or painting, the art of gardening produces living works that grow, blossom, change, and fade. As such, the garden could be considered the supreme work of art, and indeed it has been so in all civilizations. A garden on any scale enhances the architecture it surrounds. What would Versailles have been without its spectacular gardens and their orderly vistas, or the great country houses in England without the eighteenth-century landscape designers? Likewise it is hard to imagine rural or urban houses in Colombia without their planned patios and courtyards. The jagged geography of Colombia divides it into several contrasting regions: the Caribbean coast, Antioquia,...

Photographer and restorer Antonio Castañeda Buraglia presents a collection of artistic color photographs of the town of Ambalema, an historic commercial port alongside the River Magdalena in the department of Tolima. Architect Escovar Wilson-White describes the history and architecture of this unique place: "The geographical location of Ambalema is useful to understand its rise and decline. Its "enclosure" status prevented it from joining other markets. This condition changed during the boom of the tobacco industry, when navigation is imposed by the river and in 1893 with the arrival of the railroad. The economic activity linked with tobacco left in Ambalema several significant buildings. These buildings retain a glorious past who deserve a better future and that still, in spite of its sorry state, fall with dignity" (Our translation) --pp. 98-97. . The collection "Pueblos" is an historical-photographic editorial project comprising 32 numbers that document the history, population, environment and architecture of the same number of selected towns, one for each Department in Colombia.

Restoring Architecture

There are few cities in the New World that hold as many 16th and 17th century buildings as does Cartagena, Colombia. As a result, it has been designated as part UNESCO's World Heritage programme. The Colombian architect Álvaro Barrera was given responsibility for conservation of old Cartagena and half of the two-story houses in the walled district of the city have been restored to a new level of beauty. Restorations by Barrera respect the essence of the colonial period, even as he has adapted structures for 21st century use. His feeling for materials and colours enables him to harmonise the original structures with his contemporary designs. This book will become an standard reference for anyone who is interested in architectural restoration and preservation in an age of innovation.

Bogotá from the Air

Majestic at 2,600 metres above sea level, Bogot shows its best face from the air. The book provides a different perspective to admire the best facet of one of the largest cities in South America and to enjoy it with the dignity that only height can provide. From north to south and from east to west, "Bogot from the Air" is a due homage to the city that is capable of bringing as many emotions as people together. The book is the testimony of an evolutionary model that has turned the city, over the past forty years, into an urban centre in constant growth, improvement and expansion. However, the city's evolution has managed to maintain the individual, the citizen, at the heart of this process. Far from turning the city into a huge stone mass of asphalt and buildings, its development renews it and floods it with vitality, considering the fact that it breathes, feeds and lives. The traditional barrios, parks, historical and cultural centres dress up Bogot in its most splendorous gown to show it from a perspective that its early settlers could have never imagined 500 years ago.
