ANTONIS BOTINIS 1. 1 Background This introduction provides essential information about the structure and the objects of study of this volume. Following the introduction, fourteen papers which represent current research on intonation are organised into five thematic sections: (I) Overview of Intonation, (II) Prominence and Focus, (III) Boundaries and Discourse, (IV) Intonation Modelling, and (V) Intonation Technology. Within the sections the papers are arranged thematically, although several papers which deal with various aspects of intonation and prosody are basically intersectional. Prosodies

Prosodies, in the broad Firthian sense, covers phenomena that extend over stretches of segmental and featural units that must be examined with respect to their interaction with other features to fully appreciate their role in the phonetics and phonology of a given language. The papers deal with a wide range of subjects, from intonational prominence and prosodic phrasing to the acoustic properties of segments and features. Prosodies significantly broadens our knowledge of languages and dialect varieties that as yet have not been carefully investigated such as Cairene and Lebanese Arabic, Catalan including Central Catalan and the insular dialects of Majorcan, Minorcan and Alguer Catalan, Galic...

Discourse-Related Features and Functional Projections

Discourse-Related Features and Functional Projections

In this volume Silvio Cruschina uses a comparative analysis to determine the syntax of the functional projections associated with discourse-related features, and to account for the marked word orders found in Romance-particularly in the fronting phenomena. Several language-specific analyses of discourse-related phenomena have been proposed in the literature, including studies on the notions of topic and focus in Romance, but the lack of a uniform definition of these notions, together with different assumptions in relation to the triggering features, has led to the perception that the Romance languages show many distinct and heterogeneous properties with respect to dislocation and fronting constructions. This volume is intended to complement the existing literature by integrating recent work on the topic and by emphasizing original and unifying reflections that combine and coordinate diverse elements. Cruschina's investigations clarify fundamental notions such as topic, focus, and contrast, drawing on new data from Sicilian, Sardinian, and other Romance varieties.

Handbook of Japanese Dialects

Handbook of Japanese Dialects

This volume is the first comprehensive English handbook on Japanese dialects. The study of Japanese dialects has a rich tradition, contributing to fields like geolinguistics, sociolinguistics, and phonology. While influenced by Western linguistics, Japanese dialectology has also made significant original contributions through extensive fieldwork and compilation of dialect dictionaries and atlases. Most studies have been published in Japanese, allowing only a handful of foreign specialists to take full advantage of the achievements in Japanese dialectology. This handbook addresses that gap, making dialect data and analyses available to a broader audience and informing specialists about Japanese dialectology's methods and achievements. It focuses on mainland dialects, including the Hachijō language, while a separate handbook covers the Ryukyuan languages, now regarded as sister languages of Japanese.

The contributions to the book result from a vivid exchange of research ideas and research methodologies on issues related to the relationship between prosody and meaning and from stimulating discussions and collaborative work between researchers coming from different perspectives.
