Economic and Environmental Sustainability of the Asian Region
Asian economic development and environmental consequences are not only crucial for the wellbeing of the people, but are of great relevance for the global economy. The ongoing intense debate on carbon emission mitigating strategies for reducing the impact of environmental consequences has undermined the principle of equity and put a question mark on the sustainability of the development process of the most dynamic Asian economies. This volume explores fresh perspectives on the issues of wellbeing, Asian economic development and environmental concerns. The book is organised along six themes: issues in sustainability of Asian agriculture; ecological concerns in theory and practice; core themes in economic development; resource management and policy alternatives; discrimination and socio-economic equity in development; and peasant distress and sustainability of cotton economy. The articles are based on unique quantitative data and a rigorous analytical framework for examining policies for an equitable economic and environmental international regime.
Proceedings
This international symposium featured three interconnected thematic foci of interdisciplinary research. They focussed on the changes in the extent and intensity of agricultural and forest land use in tropical forest margins and their implications for rural development and for conservation of natural resources such as biodiversity, soils and water. The symposium took place in Goettingen. Almost 130 international authors have contributed a short abstract and their adress.
The Diffusion of Social Movements
It is widely recognized that social movements may spread - or 'diffuse' - from one site to another. Such diffusion, however, is a complex and multidimensional process that involves different actors, networks, and mechanisms. This complexity has spawned a large body of literature on different aspects of the diffusion process, yet a comprehensive framework remains an elusive target. This book is a response to that need, and its framework focuses on three basic analytical questions. First, what is being diffused? Second, how does diffusion occur? Finally, what is the impact of diffusion on organizational development and shifts in the scale of contentious politics? This volume suggests that diffusion is not a simple matter of political contagion or imitation; rather, it is a creative and strategic process marked by political learning, adaptation, and innovation.

China’s Monetary Policy and Interest Rate Liberalization
China has been moving to a more market oriented financial system, which has implications for the monetary policy environment. The paper investigates the stability of the money demand function (MDF) in light of progress in financial sector reforms that, for example, have resulted in significant financial innovation (so-called shadow banking) and more liberalized interest rates. The analysis of international experience suggests that rapid development of the financial system often leads to structural shifts in the MDF.
