The primary responsibility of the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) is to maximize soldier effectiveness. ARI accomplishes its mission through research and development in the acquisition, training, utilization, and retention of Army personnel. ARI research and products affect every Army mission with a human performance component. As convenient references for qualified agencies and individuals and sponsors, ARI publishes lists of its technical and research publications. This issue of the publication list describes reports published during the period October 1, 1996, to September 30, 1997. It contains the abstract of each publication and the bibliographic information needed to identify a publication. The abstracts have been written, as far as possible, to describe the principal research findings in nontechnical terms; however, technical language is used to communicate efficiently the details of research analysis. Author and subject indexing provides access to individual reports' and topics.

Results: (1) Typed transcripts of all interviews were delivered to ARI under separate covers in three volumes. (2) Twenty-nine potential CEVs were derived from the interview transcripts and developed so that each contains a title and a descriptor. The potential CEVs were face-validated in this project and are susceptible of further validation and cross-validation by SMEs. Each potential variable was designed to serve as a contributing variable in composite criteria of combat - effectiveness after being evaluated for validity by SMEs. Discussion: The potential CEVs derived in this project are deemed to possess face validity based upon the judgments of three Continental Systems Subject Matter Experts. Here "face validity" means the potential CEVs make sense and. on the surface seem to be reasonable in a military context. However, before full confidence can he placed in the utility of the CEVs, they need to be validated further.

, P05/06The purpose of this document is to communicate the annual progress for each individual research project in the Research and Advanced Concepts Office (RACO) basic research program at the United States Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI). The summaries contained herein are written by the scientists who are performing the work and provide a snapshot of their continuing efforts. In addition, RACO conducts a more detailed in-progress review of each project each year. If successful, the projects within RACO's basic research program will lay the foundations for many of ARI's future applied behavioral research efforts. These summaries serve as guideposts for ensuring that our basic research results transition to ARI' 5 applied research programs.
