Metabarcoding for use in Nordic routine aquatic biomonitoring: a validation study
Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2020-538/ Over 75% of all lakes and 40% of all rivers in the EU are found in the Nordic countries. Biomonitoring according to the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) is adopted by all Nordic countries and forms an integral part of management efforts to preserve and restore the ecological quality of freshwaters and their ecosystem services. Organisms used in WFD biomonitoring are identified by experts; this is time consuming and error prone. Molecular identification methods could be used but have not been tested for monitoring. We compared molecular to expert identification for samples from 297 Nordic lakes and streams. The DNA-based results were highly similar to expert identifications. We suggest that Nordic or European efforts towards implementation and standardization of DNA-based methodology should be undertaken to swiftly ensure the use of this promising tool in future WFD monitoring.
Ecological Effects of Water-level Fluctuations in Lakes
Most aquatic ecosystems have variable water levels. These water-level fluctuations (WLF) have multiple effects on the organisms above and below the waterline. Natural WLF patterns in lakes guarantee both productivity and biodiversity, while untimely floods and droughts may have negative effects. Human impacts on WLF have led to a stabilization of the water levels of many lakes by hydraulic regulation, untimely drawdown due to water use, or floods due to water release from hydropower plants in the catchments. Freshwater Biomonitoring and Benthic Macroinvertebrates
North American and European governments have adopted national programs for environmental monitoring and assessment that include the use of aquatic biota. These programs will use a variety of indicators of environmental health; benthic macroinvertebrates are one of the most promising of them. Peatland Forestry
The book provides a review and synthesis of boreal mire ecosystems including peat soil properties, mire hydrology, carbon and nutrient cycling, and classification of mire sites. The emphasis, however, is on peatland forests as a renewable natural resource. The approach originated in northern Europe, because there, especially in Finland, operational scale forest drainage has a long tradition based on research aiming to maintain and increase wood production on peatlands. Whenever relevant, a closer look is also given to other countries in Europe, Canada, and the USA. The results of recent studies on different environmental effects of peatland forestry are also discussed in detail.
