Textile in Architecture

This book investigates the interconnections between textile and architecture via a variety of case studies from the Middle Ages through the twentieth century and from diverse geographic contexts. Among the oldest human technologies, building and weaving have intertwined histories. Textile structures go back to Palaeolithic times and are still in use today and textile furnishings have long been used in interiors. Beyond its use as a material, textile has offered a captivating model and metaphor for architecture through its ability to enclose, tie together, weave, communicate, and adorn. Recently, architects have shown a renewed interest in the textile medium due to the use of computer-aided d...

The Steve Keene Art Book

  • Categories: Art

Steve Keene is the most prolific American painter of all time. He has produced more than 300,000 hand-painted works via his studio/chainlink fence cage where he paints more than 50 paintings at a time. Lovingly known for making affordable art, as well as being the indie rock cover art maker to Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, and Silver Jews, Keene has long been under appreciated for his importance to the 90s indie art and music scenes. The Steve Keene Art Book--originally conceived during his sold out show at Shepard Fairey's LA Gallery Subliminal Projects in 2016--is the first art book dedicated exclusively to his work.

Metatextile

The use of medium as a technique, material, and metaphor within contemporary art, architecture, and criticism is addressed in this study that illustrates the relevance of textiles. It reveals how the rise of textiles as a prominent art form since the 1990s has not been subjected to comprehensive historical and theoretical reflection thus far. Attempting to map out some of the several meanings and functions of textiles in contemporary art so as to articulate a “metatextile” theory or a “textile discourse,” the book discusses central aspects of the contemporary medium from identity, myth, and clothing to technology, architecture, ornament, anthropology, phenomenology, and historiography. This edition is written in English, French, and German.

Modern Painting (Illustrated Edition)

  • Categories: Art

"Modern Painting: Its Tendency and Meaning" surveys the important art movements of 19th and early 20th century, from Manet and Impressionism to Cubism, with special praise of Cézanne's work. The book is a detailed study of the development of art, with some incredible historical facts. It also predicted a coming era in which an art of color abstraction would replace realism. S. S. Van Dine is the pseudonym used by American art critic Willard Huntington Wright when he wrote detective novels. He was an important figure in avant-garde cultural circles in pre-WWI New York, and under the pseudonym he created the immensely popular fictional detective Philo Vance. Wright was, however, most respected in intellectual circles for his writing about art, best known of which is the book Modern Painting: Its Tendency and Meaning.
