Metatextile
The use of medium as a technique, material, and metaphor within contemporary art, architecture, and criticism is addressed in this study that illustrates the relevance of textiles. It reveals how the rise of textiles as a prominent art form since the 1990s has not been subjected to comprehensive historical and theoretical reflection thus far. Attempting to map out some of the several meanings and functions of textiles in contemporary art so as to articulate a “metatextile” theory or a “textile discourse,” the book discusses central aspects of the contemporary medium from identity, myth, and clothing to technology, architecture, ornament, anthropology, phenomenology, and historiography.
