Reassessing Communism

The thirteen authors of this collective work undertook to articulate matter-of-fact critiques of the dominant narrative about communism in Poland while offering new analyses of the concept, and also examining the manifestations of anticommunism. Approaching communist ideas and practices, programs and their implementations, as an inseparable whole, they examine the issues of emancipation, upward social mobility, and changes in the cultural canon. The authors refuse to treat communism in Poland in simplistic categories of totalitarianism, absolute evil and Soviet colonization, and similarly refuse to equate communism and fascism. Nor do they adopt the neoliberal view of communism as a project ...

This non-fiction book is about the life and art of Anna Razumovskaya, a renowned Canadian impressionist. Her paintings are in private collections of the wealthy and famous, and on display in the most prestigious art galleries. Her portfolio of pre-orders stretches over the next few years. There is a notion that success in any endeavor is due to three proverbial essential components: the right person, at the right place, at the right time. Some would add to that good luck, which seems to be a reasonable argument. Times were when Anna Rasumovskaya had none of them. Other times she had them all. But through all of these ebbs and flows of fate, she carried on a few personality traits, without wh...

Anna Pugh is one of Britain's leading folk artists. Her work has an international following, and her obvious empathy with the countryside, with animals and with plants in particular, gives her work a spellbinding charm, and has made it extremely popular. In this book, the first to be written on her work, critic Angus Stewart analyses the peculiar character and strength of her paintings and sets them in the context of her life and inspiration.

"The first study of Anton Ažbe's art school in Munich's Schwabing district and its influence on four turn-of-the-century East European female painters. The Slovenian-born Ažbe (1862-1905) was an eccentric artist and teacher who directed an innovative co-educational art school from 1891 until 1905. Ažbe's pedagogical method during these fourteen years focused on three concepts: Linienspiel (Play of Lines), Kugelprinzip (Ball Principle) and Kristallisation der Farbe (Crystallization of Color)." -- p. Anna Coatalen (née Hook) was born in Clifton, Bristol, studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art London, and then worked as a book illustrator before WW2. It was as a WRNS in Plymouth, that she met her Anglo/French husband Hervé, an RNVR engineer officer, which resulted in her spending her life in France. Anna painted prolifically throughout her life, continuing right up to her death aged 95, but never sought to publicise her work. Amongst friends who appreciated and admired her, were the artists Mary Fedden and Alexander Goudie, whose son, Lachlan, has written a very perceptive introduction to this book. Her eldest daughter Annik, with help from her family, has gathered together a selection of her most compelling works, ranging from early woodcuts and paintings to the three stained-glass windows in the Île Tudy church, Brittany. Anna's gift enabled her to encapsulate the spirit of her life and surroundings, and they are presented here as a tribute to permit a wider audience to appreciate her skill. 'The world seen through Anna's eyes, is a happy place to be and her paintings are a fitting testament to the kind and talented person that she was in life.' - Lachlan Goudie
