Born into upper-class English society, Jill Lowe made her first trip to India for all the wrong reasons. After 17 years of marriage and five children, her husband had gone bankrupt with her inheritance, and her comfortable London existence had come to a bitter end. At the age of 52 she needed to change her scenery, prove her mettle. After touring south India with a hilariously unsuitable travel companion, Jill hired her own driver in Delhi, got into his taxi and, three years later, married him. floor, sleep on charpoys and relieve themselves in the fields. On 18 November 1962, the Charlie Company of the 13 Kumaon Battalion, Kumaon Regiment, fought a Chinese attack at Rezang La Pass in Ladakh, India. The company comprised 120 soldiers and was led by Maj. Shaitan Singh. Of these soldiers, 110 were martyred in the attack. The Indian search party, which visited the battlefield on 10 February 1963, made a startling discovery-the frozen bodies of the men who had died were still holding guns in their hands, having taken bullets on their chests. One PVC (Param Vir Chakra), eight VCs (Vir Chakras), four SMs (Sena Medals) and one M-in-D (Mentioned-in-Dispatches) were awarded to the soldiers of the Charlie Company, making it one of the highest decorated ...

The Anger of Saintly Men is the story of three brothers, Sonu, Anu and Vicky, growing up in the 90s. A new decade has started. Maine Pyar Kiya has just been released. Young boys are having wet dreams after imagining what Salman Khan saw when Bhagyashree undraped herself for him on that windy night. The three brothers have just moved to their new, first and last home, which they name, Chuhedani. The Anger of Saintly Men explores how little boys are made men in Indian households. A story of sexual awakening, heartbreak and growing up under the shadow of India’s first wave of liberalisation. Told with compassion, the book delves deep into issues of masculinity, caste, class, homophobia and shame. The Anger of Saintly Men questions systems which have crushed men’s expectations, desires & hopes for centuries. One of the first novels that compels us to think on how we raise men and patriarchy’s deep grip on men’s life.

Political wisdom holds that the political boundaries of a state necessarily coincide with a nation's perceived cultural boundaries. Today, the sociocultural diversity of many polities renders this understanding obsolete. This volume provides the framework for the state-nation, a new paradigm that addresses the need within democratic nations to accommodate distinct ethnic and cultural groups within a country while maintaining national political coherence. First introduced briefly in 1996 by Alfred Stepan and Juan J. Linz, the state-nation is a country with significant multicultural—even multinational—components that engenders strong identification and loyalty from its citizens. Here, Indi...
