A lot has been done to her and she overcomes them all. Asha’s fierce love and protectiveness for her mom keeps her going. When she finds her mom with a black eye, she does everything she could to protect her mom but everything doesn’t quite go as planned. John is controlling and overbearing. He is Asha’s father but wants from her what a father should not want from their child. John refuses to let Asha go and will do anything to keep her. He does something horrible to Asha that never can be forgiven. Charles is the neighbor. He has had his eye on Asha for some time but doesn’t know how to approach her. Embodying Transnational Yoga
Embodying Transnational Yoga is a refreshingly original, multi-sited ethnography of transnational yoga that obliges us to look beyond postural practice (as̄ana) in modern yoga research. The book introduces readers to three alternative, understudied categories of transnational yoga practice which include food, music, and breathing. Studying these categories of embodied practice using interdisciplinary methods reveals transformative “engaged alchemies” that have been extensively deployed by contemporary disseminators of yoga. Readers will encounter how South Asian dietary regimens, musical practices, and breathing techniques have been adapted into contemporaneous worlds of yoga practice both within, but also beyond, the Indian Ocean rim. This book is about the perception of Japan in the sixty films set there by gaijin (foreigners) —outsiders who almost always do not speak or read Japanese. My area of attention is directed to films depicting post World War II Japan and the Japanese, and, in many cases, films showing how foreigners in the same time frame respond to Japan. Why have a substantial number of films been set there by strangers? As a body of work, what do they tell us about contemporary Japan and about cinema? These films certainly provide a new cultural history of the West’s reaction to Japan, but, even more, they are constructions that demonstrate how the West gazes at Japan. As such, more information can often be derived about the onlookers as on those looked-upon.
